It wasn’t the way they wanted it to end, but the Warrior volleyball team went down swinging last week in Wednesday night’s (Oct. 18) Regional quarterfinal match against No. 11-ranked Dyersville Beckman.

The Trailblzers proved to be too much for South Winn to handle, taking the match by a score of 3-0 and moving on in the bracket while sending the Warriors back home with a final 2023 record of 17-13.

After winning its first round playoff game earlier in the week, the TigerHawk volleyball team was tasked with taking on No. 9-ranked Dubuque Wahlert on Thursday evening. The Golden Eagles showed why they are worthy of that No. 9 ranking, defeating North Fayette Valley, 3-0.

“Wahlert is a good team and took care of the ball offensively,” said NFV coach Billie Cowley. “We are very proud of our team for last night’s efforts and the season. We won with dignity and lost with dignity – not every team is able to do this. The girls have grown as athletes and as young women throughout the season and we are extremely proud of their efforts.”

NFV runners come up short at State Qualifying Meet

Like they have done for much of the season, North Fayette Valley runners Ava Bilden and Braelyn Meyer (l-r) paced the TigerHawks at the State Qualifying Meet on Thursday afternoon in Monticello. Unfortunately, the two missed out on continuing their seasons as Meyer crossed the finish line at the 21:00.5 mark and Bilden finished in 21:11.5. (Zakary Kriener photo)

North Fayette Valley runners had their work cut out for them last week as they traveled to Monticello for their State Qualifying Meet.

With five ranked girls’ teams and three ranked boys’ teams competing and only three able to qualify for State, the TigerHawks would have to be on top of their game to continue their season.

While NFV had strong individual and team performances, they were unable to advance any athletes to Fort Dodge.

Warriors dim Comets, playoff bound!

South Winn senior Brady Ohrt makes a break to the outside on a fourth-and-long touchdown run in the first quarter of the Warriors’ 34-0 win over BCLUW on Thursday night. In the victory, which was South Winn’s fifth straight, Ohrt dominated nearly every statistical category as he had 133 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, a 19 yard-per-carry average, to go along with a passing touchdown, a 41-yard reception, a two-point conversion, 5.5 tackles, and an interception that he returned for 19 yards. If fantasy football was a thing for high school football, Ohrt would have scored 42.9 points! (Zakary Kriener photo)

After starting out 0-3 this fall, the South Winn football team has not rattled off five straight wins and is headed back to the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

Last week, the game between the Warriors and BCLUW was moved ahead a day to Thursday to help preserve the football field condition given the forecasted rain. The contest was still played in less-than-ideal conditions, but it wasn’t a factor for the Warriors as they rolled to a 34-0 win over the Comets to close out the regular season with a 5-3 mark.
