Gerleman Queen of Lilac Lanes

 

Karissa Gerleman was queen of the lanes after winning both the Handicap Singles and Handicap All-Events titles at the recent Women’s City Bowling Tournament at Lilac Lanes in West Union. Gerleman rolled a 735-2072, respectively, to top the field.

When the smoke cleared after last week’s Women’s City Bowling Tournament Lilac Lanes in West Union, Karissa Gerleman was crowned queen of the lanes.

Gerleman rolled the highest handicap singles game and the high All Events Handicap events. She was also a member of the winning team.

Heartbreaker

 

The outstanding 2015-16 Turkey Valley girls’ basketball season came to an end Friday night in Des Moines. The magical season featured over seven consecutive weeks atop the Class 1A rankings, an undefeated record in the regular season, and the school’s first-ever appearance in the State Tournament. Following a heartbreaking 49-48 loss to Springville in the championship game, Trojan players, coaches, cheerleaders, and managers proudly display the team’s runner-up hardware. After nearly 32 minutes of battle between the Turkey Valley Trojans and Springville Orioles in the State Championship game Friday night, it all came down to the final 3.2 seconds to decide the 2016 Class 1A girls’ basketball champion in front of a record Wells Fargo Arena crowd.

After Turkey Valley beat Springville in January, Springville was able to extract its revenge when it mattered most, picking up a thrilling 49-48 win over the previously unbeaten Trojans.

The annual Upper Iowa Conference Senior All-Star Basketball Extravaganza will be held Thursday, March 24, in the North Fayette Valley High School gym in West Union.

Senior boys and girls in the UIC will get together for one last time on a high school basketball court to give fans an exciting evening of basketball.

The South Winneshiek Warrior football schedule will have a new look for the 2016 and 2017 football seasons. Earlier this winter, it was announced that the Warriors would remain in Class 1A, but move from District 4 to District 2.

As a result, the Warriors will share only two of the same opponents from their previous district, Sumner-Fredricksburg and MFL/MarMac. New faces in the district include Denver, BCLUW, Central Springs, Lake Mills, and Belmond-Klemme.

Six Upper Iowa University wrestlers earned the right to compete at the NCAA DII National Tournament March 11-13 in Sioux Falls, S.D. One Peacock will go as the runner-up; the other five all finished fourth at the Super Regional in Sioux Falls, S.D., over the weekend. The Upper Iowa wrestling team finished third at the NCAA DII Super Regional Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D., over the weekend.

Six Peacock wrestlers earned the right to advance to the NCAA Championships March 11-12 in Sioux Falls by finishing in the top four in their respective weight brackets.

Turkey Valley junior guard Shelby Reicks and the Trojan girls’ basketball team picked up a hard-fought 55-51 victory over Mount Ayr Monday morning in the first round of the State Basketball Tournament. The Class 1A No. 1-ranked Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team cruised its way into the school record books by punching its first-ever ticket to the State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines.

That history, however, meant nothing to the group of young Trojan athletes when they stepped onto the court in Wells Fargo Arena Monday morning.

Turkey Valley and Mount Ayr officially kicked of the 2016 Iowa State Basketball Tournament shortly after 10 a.m. for fans around the state.

North Fayette Valley will be competing in Class 2A District 4.

The schedule for 2016-2017 is below. The schedule for 2017-2018 will have the same teams in the same order, but reversing where they play.

Landers Kuboushek, South Winneshiek High School’s all-time wins leader, capped off his impressive Warrior wrestling career with a runner-up finish at the 2016 Iowa State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines over the weekend. 

Kuboushek, competing in the Class 1A 195 pound bracket, fell to Slade Sifuentes of Lake Mills during Saturday night’s main event at Wells Fargo Arena.

“I am very proud of Landers and all of his accomplishments as a Warrior wrestler,” said South Winn head coach Jake Elsbernd after the tournament. “He left his mark on our program and set the bar extremely high for his teammates and future South Winn wrestlers.”

The South Winneshiek girls’ basketball team continued its postseason run Tuesday night, Feb. 16, as it traveled to Troy Mills to take on the North Linn Lynx.

The upset-minded Warriors, coming off consecutive wins over West Central and Postville, were outmatched by the Class 1A foe Lynx, which downed the Warriors, 68-22.
