With a squad of just seven girls, the West Central girls’ track and field team will have an uphill battle to be competitive this season.

However, 11th-year head coach Randy Fink acknowledged that with hard work, this group of girls is capable of competing night in and night out.

“We have a small but very hardworking group with a positive attitude most of the time,” Fink said. “It will be tough to score as a team, but we plan to get off the bus and perform to the best of our abilities every time out.”

The 2016 spring sports season is officially underway as the Warrior track and field teams traveled to Waverly last Tuesday afternoon, March 8, for indoor action.

The Warrior girls were especially strong in the field events against the competitive field of northeast Iowa schools. Senior Rebecca Hertges placed first in shot put after posting a distance of 35’05”, while junior Amber Brincks picked up a pair of early-season top-fives in the high jump (third, 5’00”) and long jump (fifth, 15’04.25”).

In the running events, freshman sprinter Ellie Loesch led the Warrior girls as she posted a time of 7.80 seconds in the 55-meter dash, good enough for fifth overall in the finals.

On the boys’ side, the field events were also an area of strength. South Winn put a pair of athletes in the top-10 of the shot put after Carson Lensing (49’00”) brought home top honors and Carson Bohr (41’01”) took home ninth place.
