The South Winneshiek wrestling squad encountered some of its stiffest competition of the season Saturday as it traveled to Alburnett for tournament action.

While Class 2A Denver-Tripoli walked away with the team title by scoring 293 points, South Winneshiek was involved in a three-way battle for second against a pair of Class 1A top-10 teams.

North Fayette Valley wrestlers came out of last week’s matches a little battered as they prepare for the postseason that starts with the UIC Meet Saturday in Monona.

The TigerHawks won two of three matches Thursday in Edgewood but suffered three injury defaults at the tournament Saturday in Waverly. The good news from Waverly was NFV heavyweight Ethan Lape winning his weight class.

With the storm on Tuesday, Jan. 17, that postponed the game at Lansing, NFV boys’ basketball got only one game in last week.

However, the one game was a thriller as conference-leading MFL/MM won by a point, 49-48, Thursday in West Union.

The NFV girls won a thriller over visiting MFL/MM Friday in West Union, 55-53.

In their first meeting in November, the Bulldogs won handily, 54-43, and for a while Friday, it looked like the ‘Dogs would walk away with another easy win.

The South Winneshiek wrestling team made the short journey to Decorah Saturday to participate in the Decorah Dual Tournament.

The Warriors opened up the day with a 57-9 win over Waukon. South Winn received wins by fall from Gabe Sadler (113), Tayton Bullerman (132), Rodney Schwartzhoff (145), Luke Massman (152), Braxton Smith (160), and Jackson Lukes (285) to get the win.
