Close points standings with 2 weeks to go

Simpson wins Corn Belt Clash

Chad Simpson increased his points lead as he won his fourth race of the season in the Corn Belt Clash on Friday, Aug. 9, at the Fayette County Speedway in West Union.

With the field of Late Models strung out, Simpson cruised to victory.

In the regular feature races, Allison’s Trevor Fecht won the B-Mods. Adam Cline of Decorah just beat West Union’s Justin Hanson to the checkered flag in the Hobby Stock feature. Lansing’s Danny Cole Jr. edged Dan Trimble of Fairbank in the Stock class.

With just two races left this season, there is some intense competition in the points standings.

Paul Seabrooke has a 74-point lead (538-464) over friend and fellow Elgin native Jerrod Torkelson.

Perhaps the closest races are in the Hobby Stock and 600 Mod-Lite classes.

For Mike Paulson of rural Hesper, dirt track racing has offered a career opportunity many race fans may not think about every Friday and Saturday night of racing season.

Paulson became the technical inspector for the Fayette County Speedway in West Union in 2000 and later was offered a job at Upper Iowa Speedway in Decorah, as well.

“I thought it was kind of interesting. I have been around racecars quite a bit,” said the inspector.

He started helping friends work on their racecars in the late ‘80s.

McKowen is the son of Wapsie Valley athletic director and boys’ basketball coach Marty McKowen.

Brooks is the all-time leading scorer in Iowa boy’s basketball history with 2831 points in 2000-2003. The runner-up is Cary Cochran of Tri Center (Neola) with 2650.
