Turnovers continued to be the story for the West Central football team as it turned the ball over five times in a 62-12 loss to the Turkey Valley Trojans on Friday, Sept 1, in Jackson Junction.

The Blue Devils played the Trojans, the eighth-ranked team in Eight-Man Football, tough in the first quarter. West Central possessed the ball first, and starting from its own 26-yard line it marched down the field highlighted by a 32-yard reception by freshman Aidan Nelson.

“We ran really well with the majority of our runners from both teams cutting significant time from last week; some even took minutes off of their times,” was the way first-year head cross country coach Neal Bentley described NFV’s efforts at the Oelwein Invitational Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Hickory Grove Golf Course in Oelwein.

There were 20 schools at the meet, and many were highly rated in various classes.

NFV volleyball atoned for its weak showing last week by dominating visiting Postville Thursday in West Union. The TigerHawks swept all three sets, 25-14, 25-12, and 25-12.

Game one started on a 9-0 run behind the strong serve of Allie Lau, and the TigerHawks never allowed the Pirates to get back into the game.

The two-game nondistrict part of the season (sometimes thought of as preseason) is over as 7th-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock beat NFV, 27-7, Friday in Waverly.

Next are the Class 2A District 4 games that will decide which two squads from the district will qualify for the postseason. Only district games count toward the playoffs.

Friday’s game against the Go-Hawks was a typical smash-mouth affair between two football powerhouse programs.

The South Winneshiek football team, ranked No. 8 in Class 1A in the preseason, struggled to get things going as it kicked off its 2017 season Friday night against Wapsie Valley at Upper Iowa University in Fayette.

While the Warriors were able to move the ball steadily in the opening quarter, neither team was able to find the scoreboard.

Douglas, Gamm lead NFV cross country

Chandler Douglas (570) is off to a strong start in the Fourth Annual Ed-Co Invitational Tuesday, Aug. 22, in Edgewood. The NFV junior finished third overall in a time of 17:43. However, since neither of the two runners in front of him represented schools without full teams, Douglas earned first-place points in the team scores. (Jerry Wadian photo)

The scoreboard read Decorah 31, NFV 6, but that did not indicate how close the game really was.

The visiting Vikings scored three times on runs of 21, 62, and 49 yards. That total of 132 yards was over half of Decorah’s total rushing yards.
