NFV had another tough Saturday tournament going 0-3 at the Columbus tourney over the weekend.

“We still haven’t solved our Saturday problems, and we’re running out of time,” lamented head coach Bruce Ehler after the day was over in Waterloo.

The TigerHawks play well during the week but have had problems in all six of their Saturday tournaments.

Everyone knew the first match against Independence, ranked ninth in Class 4A, would be a tough, and it was as the Mustangs prevailed, 21-9, in both sets.

NFV won the first set against Don Bosco, a good Class 1A squad, but fell behind early in the second set, losing 21-13.

“We never seemed to recover the rest of the day,” commented Ehler.

The Jesup Invitational is one of the largest meets of the season with over 28 schools represented.

For the second consecutive road game, North Fayette Valley held a lead only to lose it in the second half.

On its last road trip, the TigerHawks led Monti, 20-13, at the break but was outscored, 21-6 in the second half.

Friday in Dyersville, NFV held a 14-7 lead at the break, but were outscored, 19-0, over the final 24 minutes.

“We were inconsistent,” stated head coach Bob Lape. “We did some things well, then turned around and did some things poorly.”

The Columbia blue, black and silver opened fast with a 38-yard scoring strike from Brooks Hovden to Dylan Muggler. Zach Massman hit the extra point and NFV led, 7-0, in the first three minutes of the contest.

Beckman scored a 34-yard pas with 3:14 left in the opening quarter to tie the game, 7-7.

The TigerHawks increased their lead with a 36-yard pass from Hovden to Burrow. Massman’s PAT made it 14-7 with nine minutes to play in the first half.

However, the final 24 minutes were all downhill for the TigerHawks.

It was another strong weekend for the South Winneshiek cross country program as it competed at the 40th Mustang Invitational in Independence on Saturday. Both the No. 3-ranked Warrior boys and No. 5-ranked Warrior girls took the top spot in their respective races, a feat that also featured a top-two individual finisher in each event.

The SW boys placed four runners in the top seven of Saturday morning’s race, which led to a 35-point team effort. The Warriors finished with a 42-point advantage over second-place West Delaware, while No. 11-ranked Maquoketa Valley was third with 81 points.

An energy was in the air in the Calmar gym Tuesday night, Sept. 19, in Calmar as the Warrior volleyball team hosted Central Elkader for “Dig Pink” Night.

Each fall, the Warriors participate in “Dig Pink” Night to help raise awareness for breast cancer. Various goods and items are raffled off during the volleyball contest to help fundraise for the cause.

“The girls really get fired up about ‘Dig Pink’ night every year. It gives them a chance to work together toward something bigger than themselves or the game of volleyball,” said coach Glenna Munuswamy. “The night always brings in a larger crowd, and the girls definitely feed off its energy.”

With both the Warriors and their opponents dressed in pink uniforms, as well as a sea of pink filling the bleachers, the South Winneshiek girls remained focused on continuing their streak of hot play on the court.

A balanced offensive attack, dominating defensive play, and stellar special teams play were among the ingredients leading to the South Winn football team’s 50-12 win over BCLUW Friday night on Homecoming.

After starting the season 0-3 against teams that currently hold a combined 14-1 record (only loss from when two of the teams played each other), the Warriors have been clicking in all aspects of the game as they have now outscored their last two opponents by a total of 100-12.

“We are playing well right now,” said an elated coach Jason Ohrt after the win. “Our offense had a great, well-executed, balanced attack; our special teams units picked it up a notch; and we played solid defense all night long.”

The West Central football team had its most productive night offensively during its Homecoming game. The Blue Devils fell to Eight-Man No. 8 Tripoli Panthers (Cedar Rapids Gazette/KGYM poll), 71-28.

While the Blue Devils had a hard time keeping the potent Panthers offense from rushing its way into the end zone in the first half, it didn’t help that West Central fumbled the ball on the first play of the game.

The Blue Devils found success through the air during the game. Tripoli scored four touchdowns before junior quarterback Adam Dolf hit freshman wide receiver Aiden Nelson in stride with a 48-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Dolf then found Nelson in the end zone of the successful two-point conversion.

NFV volleyball opened the week with a four-set victory over Clayton Ridge Tuesday, Sept.19, in West Union.

Games scores against the Eagles were 25-22, 25-12, 17-25, and 25-19.

The opening set was close throughout with NFV rising to the occasion with a couple of points at the end. Marrah Burrack and Claire Hanson led the TigerHawk O with five and four kills, respectively.

According to head coach Bruce Ehler, “We didn’t make a single serving error or give up an ace in the entire match; that is fantastic.”
