The South Winneshiek wrestling team traveled to Wapsie Valley Saturday to compete in the Chris Davis Invitational. With 11 SW wrestlers in competition, the Warriors placed second in their first tournament action of the 2017-2018 season.

“We were able to place nine of our wrestlers in the top four of their weight classes,” recapped coach Jake Elsbernd after all the action. “I was very happy with how we wrestled overall.”

The South Winneshiek girls’ basketball team tipped off its 2017-2018 season last week by falling to Class 3A No. 2-ranked Crestwood and Upper Iowa Conference foe MFL/MarMac.

On Thursday, Nov. 30, the Warriors hosted one of the top teams in the state as the Crestwood Cadets came to town.

The West Central boys’ basketball team got its season off to a rocky start last week with road losses to Denver, Turkey Valley, and Postville. 

The Blue Devils opened the season on the road with Denver on Monday, Nov. 27, and were defeated by the Cyclones, 85-23.

While the NFV boys and girls’ bowling teams lost to Decorah Friday in the first home match of the season at Lilac Lanes in West Union, they showed definite improvement. Brian Roulson and Emily Guyer each had the best single game by either squad.

The young NFV boys’ basketball team opened the season with two straight wins last week, toppling defending UIC champion MFL/MM and Clayton Ridge. Both home victories were by three points.

NFV opened the season with a 51-48 victory over MFL/MM Tuesday, Nov. 28, in West Union.

The game was a real thriller with the TigerHawks winning on a 3-pointer by Lance Butikofer at the buzzer.

The NFV girls’ basketball team picked up its first win of the season Friday night in West Union beating Clayton Ridge, 44-35.

The rest of the week saw the TigerHawks drop two games to some pretty good squads.

Friday’s first win came against a veteran CR team that featured four seniors and five juniors.

The freshman lost his first three matches but came back to win the final three, two by fall, to finish 15th overall at 160. The wrestling meet Friday and Saturday in Independence matched some of the best teams and individuals in the state of Iowa. There were 31 teams competing, including four from out of state. 

When the smoke cleared, NFV senior Jordan Baumler was the champion at 220. The reigning champion in Class 2A won five matches, four by fall. Two opponents (Areon Day of New Hampton and Hunter Crawford of Indee) were ranked in 2A. Baumler beat No. 6 Day by fall and won a 3-2 decision over No. 8 Crawford to win the title.

For the fourth year in a row, the West Central girls’ basketball team has a new head coach. 

Last year’s assistant coach, Jordan Greco, takes over the reins for the departed Erin Buehler. 

Greco takes over a team that returns all five starters — Jalyn Brownell, Braidyn Buhrow, Lauren Fink, Mary McDonough, and Kenzie Squires — from a 3-17 season last year. 

Those five starters are joined by four athletic freshmen  — Isabell Eitel, Kylee Lickliss, Bryleigh Rouse, and Marlee Squires — which should give the Blue Devils some much-needed depth they haven’t had in recent years. The team also returns sophomores Rosita Hepperle and Denver Richards.

Blue Devils to rely on complete team effort this season

The 2017-2018 West Central boys’ basketball team looks to improve upon its 1-20 record from a season ago. 

Led by head coach Darin Lockard, the Blue Devils will need to replace their entire starting backcourt this season after graduating leading scorer Brady Forsyth (14.6 ppg) and ball handlers Collin Kane (6.7 ppg) and Derek Pape (2.6 ppg). 

“We are definitely going to be looking to play a complete team game this year,” said Lockard. “We have quite a few returning guys that have had good minutes in the past, most of when play in the post. With our guards we are going to be young. I saw a lot of good things out of our guards in this first week of practice. I feel like we have a couple guys who can step up into some ball-handling roles for us.
