Thursday, April 12, was a bright spot for West Central athletics as all four of its spring sports teams finally got a competition under their belts as northeast Iowa took a short break from inclement weather.

With all their meets having been canceled leading up to the MFL/MarMac invitational, the West Central boys’ and girls’ track and field teams were excited to finally hit the oval this spring. Mother Nature blanked NFV sports last week, pitching a no-hit shutout.

Between the snow on Tuesday and the unseasonably cold, windy conditions the rest of the week, none of the eight scheduled athletic events took place last week, and one event has already been cancelled for this week.

Girls’ track meets in Mason City and at Beckman were cancelled, as were the boys’ track meets at Ed-Co and Waverly. The boys’ meet in Cresco on Tuesday (April 10) has already been cancelled.

TigerHawk boys’ and girls’ golf were both scheduled to open at Pleasant Valley Sports Club in Clermont on Thursday, but the meet has been moved to Tuesday, April 17, in Clermont.

The Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) recently made a significant change in how girls’ golf is classified.

Starting this season, there will be only four classes instead of the five in most other girls’ sports. Thus, NF will compete in Class 2A this spring.

When asked about the change, NFV head coach Robin Madole got a big grin on her face as she answered, “It’ll be good for us.”
