The South Winn baseball team, which debuted at No. 8 in the Class 1A week four rankings, had another strong week on the diamond. The team went 6-1 on the week, including 6-0 in UIC play, with its only loss coming to Class 3A No. 9-ranked Decorah.
Postville
The Warriors opened the week at home against Postville on Monday, June 11, with a pair of wins by a combined score of 21-1 over Postville.
In the first game, the Warriors were victorious, 9-0, with an effort that saw the red and white allow only two hits.
Rodney Schwartzhoff led the way for the South Winn offense as he went 2-4 with three RBI, while sophomore Noah Tieskoetter was equally as impressive on the mound, allowing no hits and striking out seven batters in four innings of work. Tieskoetter also managed a rare feat during his start as he was able to strike out four batters in a single inning due to a dropped strike-three call that allowed a batter to reach base.
Seth Greve earned the save as he struck out three batters in three innings.
After falling behind, 1-0, through an inning of the second game of the evening, the Warriors responded with a 10-run second inning as they managed a 12-1 victory over the Pirates.
Hunter Todd led the way on offense as he had a two-RBI double, while Austin Tieskoetter earned the win with a six-strikeout performance.
“Our pitching staff combined for 12 innings of one-run baseball, including 19 strikeouts and only one walk,” said Warrior coach Alex Smith. “Our pitching continues to develop, and it has been fun seeing the internal competition of a number of guys pushing each other to be better each time they take the mound.”
