The South Winn baseball team, which debuted at No. 8 in the Class 1A week four rankings, had another strong week on the diamond. The team went 6-1 on the week, including 6-0 in UIC play, with its only loss coming to Class 3A No. 9-ranked Decorah.

Postville

The Warriors opened the week at home against Postville on Monday, June 11, with a pair of wins by a combined score of 21-1 over Postville.

In the first game, the Warriors were victorious, 9-0, with an effort that saw the red and white allow only two hits.

Rodney Schwartzhoff led the way for the South Winn offense as he went 2-4 with three RBI, while sophomore Noah Tieskoetter was equally as impressive on the mound, allowing no hits and striking out seven batters in four innings of work. Tieskoetter also managed a rare feat during his start as he was able to strike out four batters in a single inning due to a dropped strike-three call that allowed a batter to reach base.

Seth Greve earned the save as he struck out three batters in three innings.

After falling behind, 1-0, through an inning of the second game of the evening, the Warriors responded with a 10-run second inning as they managed a 12-1 victory over the Pirates.

Hunter Todd led the way on offense as he had a two-RBI double, while Austin Tieskoetter earned the win with a six-strikeout performance.

“Our pitching staff combined for 12 innings of one-run baseball, including 19 strikeouts and only one walk,” said Warrior coach Alex Smith. “Our pitching continues to develop, and it has been fun seeing the internal competition of a number of guys pushing each other to be better each time they take the mound.”

With the sweep (5-4 and 9-5) of Central/Elkader on Wednesday in West Union, NFV head coach Bob Lape became the winningest softball coach in Upper Iowa Conference history.

Lape now has 616 wins, one more than MFL/MM Hall of Famer Roger Martin, whose son, Bill, was the news editor at The Union for many years.

Lape is in his 25th year at NFV and has only one losing season, his first when he took over a team that had lost 50 consecutive games over two years.

Wednesday’s historic victories did not come easily, despite the fact that the Warriors were winless on the season.

While the big news in NFV softball was coach Bob Lape becoming the winningest coach in UIC softball history, the TigerHawk softball players were busy playing seven other games during the week, winning five of them to run their record to 12-7 on the season, including a 6-2 mark in the UIC.

The week began Monday in Maynard, when NFV swept the Blue Devils, 9-4 and 17-9.

The TigerHawks struck early in game one, plating three runs on just one hit in the opening inning. Marrah Burrack’s infield single and a walk to Tatum Kahler was NFV’s only offense as three WC errors allowed NFV runners to score.

The West Union swim team opened its season with a win Thursday in Manchester, 370-292.

“This was a really good win because we only had four days of practice,” commented head coach Kennedy Balk. “I can hardly wait to see what the kids can do over the rest of the season.”

The boys’ 8-and-under swimmers started the team in the right direction as the medley relay of Tytus Stansberry, William Kent-Thomas, Brooxton Lundgren, and Dane Wymer claimed first place.

Also in relays, the boys’ 13-14 free relay of Ryan Wettleson, John Starrett, James Baumler, and Liam McVey won gold.

Individually, Gabe Stansbery won the boys’ 9-10 50 freestyle.

For the girls, Laci Lauer won silver in the 100 individual relay, and Leah Shreve won the 25 butterfly.
