Warriors compete at Tripoli Invite

The Warriors were back on the mat Saturday at the 53^rd Annual Tripoli Invitational. In a field that included a pair of top-5 teams in Class 1A, South Winneshiek battled to a fifth-place finish with 118 team points.

“It was good to get back in action and see if we were able to execute some of the things we have been working on,” said SW coach Jacob Elsbernd. “I thought we began the day alright and competed hard to put ourselves in some placing matches. Unfortunately, I don’t think our team did a very good job preparing for the final round of the day as we dropped most of those matches.”

Warrior girls split in first action of '19

The South Winneshiek girls returned to the court Thursday night in Calmar and kept their winning streak alive. The Warriors picked up their fifth win of the season, including their fourth consecutive, by defeating the Class 3A Decorah Vikings, 41-37.

“(We played) two completely different halves of basketball (tonight),” said coach Steve Hoffert after the four-point win. “We did an outstanding job of moving and sharing the basketball in the first half. In the second half, Decorah turned up the pressure on defense and we didn’t respond.”

SW boys fall to Decorah, rebound with big UIC win

The South Winn boys’ basketball team returned to the court Thursday for the first time in 2019 as it tipped off the second half of the season at home against Decorah.

The Warriors got out to an early, 17-13, lead after a quarter of play, but Decorah narrowed the margin in the second quarter to make it a one-point lead for SW at the half.

Roulson rolls 543 in TigerHawk loss

Friday, NFV bowlers travelled to Waukon. 

The boys’ contest looked like a good matchup as the Indians’ had the same record as the TigerHawks at 3-1.

The game was as good as the record indicated with Waukon edging NFV by only 60 pins, 2698-2638. 

Brian Roulson provided most of the highlights as the senior scorched the alleys for a 266-277-543 to top all bowlers. The 277 and 543 are both school records.

TigerHawks 4th at Crestwood

The NFV wrestling team returned to the mat Saturday for the Mike Flanagan Tournament in Crestwood. 

The TigerHawks finished an impressive fourth with 142.5 points. Cedar Falls (269), Crestwood (236), and Caledonia, Minn. (197.5), finished one, two, three, respectively.  

What made the NFV results even more impressive was the fact that the team did not field wrestlers in the final three weights.

Boys nip Bulldogs by 1

The NFV boys’ basketball hit the hardcourt at home Friday against MFL/MM. With both teams coming into the New Year riding hot streaks, something was going to have to give.

The visitors came in riding a four-game win streak and the TigerHawks won their final seven games before the break.

Girls lose to Bulldogs

NFV girls’ basketball faced undefeated MFL/MM Friday in West Union. The TigerHawks came out on the short end of a 64-27 score to the 12-0 Bulldogs.

The visitors raced to a 24-9 first-quarter lead. NFV rallied to only be outscored by one over the next eight minutes, 13-12.

The South Winneshiek girls’ basketball team rounded out the 2018 portion of the season on a positive note, notching a 47-43 win over Turkey Valley on Friday, Dec. 21.

The Trojans had the upper hand early on, leading the Warriors by a score of 23-20 at the half.

SW boys outlast Trojans

The Warrior boys’ basketball team picked up win number six of the season on Friday night, Dec. 21, as it defeated Turkey Valley, 59-47.

“This was a great team victory for our guys,” said coach Blake Moen. “From start to finish, our guys did a great job of staying focused and staying the course throughout the entire 32 minutes.”

Still no ice fishing

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) still does not recommend ice-fishing at Volga Lake.

According to the DNR, “The edges are thin. Rain and rising river levels will create variable ice conditions. Use extreme caution as conditions can change fast. Ice depths are highly variable.”

 Lake Meyer has ice three to five inches thick, but extreme caution is urged. Edges may be soft; check ice depths often, especially near springs.
