Coach Blake Moen and the Warrior boys’ basketball team got the season started with a bang, notching a pair of wins over two quality Upper Iowa Conference opponents in MFL/MarMac and Postville.

MFL/MarMac

The Warriors started a bit slow, but finished strong in their season opener Tuesday, Dec. 3, at MFL/MarMac.

“This was a complete team victory for us against a very talented team,” said Coach Moen after the 54-39 win. “We were slow and weren’t hitting shots in the first half, but in the second half our defensive intensity really took over and we were able to hold of some of their top scorers and turn defensive stops into points on the other end.”

The South Winneshiek wrestling team was on the mats for the first time this season on Saturday when the Warriors participated in the Chris Davis Invitational at Wapsie Valley.

“With 16 teams present, there were a lot of good wrestlers and I’m pretty excited that we were able to place nine of our 10 wrestlers in the top six of the tournament,” said coach Jacob Elsbernd after the event. “We had a lot of guys step up and wrestle through some tough matches to get big wins throughout the day. We are a really young team and we didn’t have our only senior (Logan Schnuelle) wrestling today, which is promising for the future.”

The Warriors took third place in the team standings, scoring 137 points and finishing above of traditional powers North Linn (fourth, 126.5 points) and Class 1A No. 10-ranked Eagle Grove (sixth, 100 points).

Leading the way for South Winn was sophomore 170-pounder Logan Hageman who took first place and recorded a pair of falls on the day. Hageman won a 12-9 decision over Waterloo Columbus’ Carson Hartz in the finals.

“Logan had a really good day,” said Elsbernd. “You could see his confidence continue to grow throughout the tournament).

Also having a good day was sophomore Phillip French who placed second at 120 pounds. French picked up a fall in the semifinals before falling to No. 4-ranked (113 pounds) Clayton McDonough of Central Springs.

Sam Conway (152 pounds) went 3-1 on the day to take third place, while No. 8-ranked (195 pounds) Damon Meyer jumped up to 220 pounds to go 3-1 and take third place. Meyer’s loss came in the semifinals as No. 10-ranked Teddy Behrends of Central Springs grinded out a 5-3 decision.

“This was a great tournament to begin the year with and after watching a lot of matches, we have a good idea of what we need to do to get better,” closed Coach Elsbernd. “We will be back in action on Thursday at Oelwein!”

On Saturday, the Warriors will host the South Winneshiek Invitational in Calmar. Teams that will be in attendance include Decorah, (Class 1A No. 5) Denver, GMLOS (Minnesota), New Hampton, North Fayette Valley, (Class 2A No. 3) Osage, Waukon, and (Class 2A No. 1) West Delaware.

The TigerHawk girls got off to a hot start this season, picking up a win over then-No. 7-ranked MFL/MarMac in its first game. Week two, however, presented a pair of tough matchups against Crestwood and Central that saw NFV drop to 1-2 on the season.

Crestwood

The TH girls hit the road Thursday night for their second consecutive matchup against a top 7-ranked team as they took on Class 3A No. 7 Crestwood.

“I thought we played really well after the first three minutes, but we had no answer for (Sharon) Goodman all night,” said coach Jim Calkins following the 67-44 loss. “I thought we played without fear, but we were intimidated by her presence.”

The Cadet senior was able to score 34 points, grab 15 rebounds, and block eight shots in the contest.

Crestwood was able to get out to an early lead in the game, putting the TigerHawks in a 21-11 deficit after the opening quarter. The Cadets added to their lead in the second, holding a 40-20 lead at the half.

NFV came out of the locker room with a spark in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 49-36, but the Class 3A squad was able to close out the game with a 67-44 final.

“Our girls played hard!” said a proud Coach Calkins. “It was good to see them and will help us in preparation for a tournament run later this season.”

The North Fayette Valley boys’ basketball team tipped off its season last week, taking on Class 3A Crestwood on the road on Thursday and then coming home to face off against Upper Iowa Conference opponent Central Elkader.

Crestwood

It was a perfect storm of obstacles that inhibited the TigerHawks in their season opener against the Cadets of Crestwood as injuries and early foul trouble prevented the team from playing the way it wanted to.

“We have three would-be starters out for this game with injuries and then two minutes into the game, our starting point guard Jonah Moore injured his ankle and was unable to return,” said head coach Matt Krambeer. “To add a bit more adversity, we had wo players pick up three early fouls in the first quarter and we had to go deep to our bench.”

The South Winneshiek cross country program ended its season on a strong note thanks to a fifth-place finish by Billie Wagner in the girls’ race and an eighth-place finish by the Warrior boys’ team at Saturday’s State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge.

Billie Wagner

“We were very pleased with the way our kids wrapped up the season/ Our goal is always to put ourselves in position to challenge for the best individual or team spot we are capable of getting on that day,” said co-coach Kevin Kearney. “That is exactly what we did this weekend. Everyone gave themselves an opportunity to compete with the groups they were capable of racing. We had many lifetime-best efforts as a result.”

The girls’ 1A race featured only one Warrior runner: freshman Billie Wagner. That Warrior freshman went on to post one of the best South Winn times at the State Meet in school history as her 19:02.6 (season best) earned her a fifth-place finish and All-State honors.
