Winneshiek County Dairy Banquet Friday 

      The 61st annual Winneshiek County Dairy Banquet will be held on Friday evening at the Festina Parish Center, where a new generation of royalty will be crowned/capped and area dairy farmers will be recognized for their accomplishments.

      A meal will be served beginning at 7 p.m. with the awards program slated to start at 8 p.m. The program will include DHIA awards, several individual awards, scholarship presentations, and the crowning of the 2024 Winneshiek County Dairy Princess, Little Miss Squirt, and Little Mr. Herdsman.

WUFD Pancake Supper

      The West Union Fire Department will host its annual Pancake and Sausage Supper Thursday, April 18. Serving will be from 5-8:30 p.m. at the fire station. This is a dine in or carry out event. Cost is a freewill donation.

‘Welcome to Medicare’ seminar registration available

      “Welcome to Medicare,” a 90-minute seminar offered by the Gundersen Palmer Hospital and its SHIIP counselors, will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4. The seminar will be hosted by Friends of the West Union Community Library and will be held in the Heiserman Room, located in the lower level of the local library.

      The program will cover Medicare Part A and Part B benefits, the prescription drug benefit (Part D), Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) and Medicare supplement insurance.

      To learn about Parkinson’s disease, its effects, and possible treatments, register now to participate in “A Journey Through Parkinson’s Disease.” Fayette County Extension and Outreach, along with Iowa State’s Department of Kinesiology, and Human Sciences Extension and Outreach are sponsoring the series in Oelwein beginning Friday, May 3.

      The Hawkeye Fire Department will host its annual omelet breakfast Sunday. Dine-in and carry-out services will be from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Hawkeye Community Hall. The 2023 menu includes a three-egg omelet, hash browns, toast, fruit, rolls, and coffee, juice or milk.

Free movie at the library

      Friends of the Library of West Union will host a free movie in the West Union Community Library Windsor Room at 1 p.m. Thursday.

      In the 2023 Lucas Film production, the daredevil archaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary dial that can change the course of history. Accompanied by his goddaughter, he soon finds himself squaring off against Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi who works for NASA.

Fair Queen Contest applications being accepted

Fair Queen Contest applications being accepted

      The Fayette County Fair is quickly approaching, which means the crowning of a new fair queen will soon be here. The application window opened Monday and will continue through Sunday, June 30.

      In addition to Fayette County communities nominating their candidates, other young ladies may again run at-large. 

      The coronation ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, at the Fayette County Fair in West Union. The traditional pie auction fundraiser will follow. Candidates must also be available for a mandatory information meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, at the fairgrounds.
