Butterfield begins new role as Elgin Library director

By Zakary Kriener

The Elgin Public Library welcomed its new director, Shane Butterfield, on Monday afternoon. Butterfield and his family live in rural Elgin, and he is excited about his new role within the community.

“Today is my first day, so I will be spending a lot of time getting familiar with the library and how things work,” said Butterfield earlier this week. “My goal early on is to focus on identifying where the library is currently at with its programs and offerings and I look forward to seeing what is already in place, as well as what programs we can resurrect or bring in.”

Walking School Bus volunteers needed

Volunteers are still being sought for the newly organized West Union Walking School Bus program.

As reported in last week’s Union, the North Fayette Community School District, Palmer Community Health and the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative are teaming up to bring Walking School Buses to West Union this spring and are looking for volunteers to help.

A Walking School Bus is a group of students walking to and from school with responsible supervisors. It is just like riding the bus…minus the bus!

For additional information and/or to volunteer, please contact Ashley Christensen, Safe Routes to School liaison for the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative, at (563) 382-6171 or achristensen@uerpc.org.
