Ronald Hageman, age 84, of Calmar, IA, passed away on Monday, December 4, 2023, at Ossian Senior Hospice. 

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 11, 2023, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 304 South Maryville Street, Calmar, IA, with Rev. Henry Huber presiding.  Burial was in the church cemetery.

Visitation was from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m., Sunday, December 10, 2023, at the Helms Funeral Home, French Chapel, 202 South Washington St., in Calmar, IA and also after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Monday.

Marion Faye Snyder Heying, died Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at the Hillcrest Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner. Burial followed at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, rural Sumner. Visitation was held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 8, 2023 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Saturday. Memorials may be made in Marion's name to Community Memorial Hospital, Hillcrest Home, or SEMS, all in Sumner or to a charity of the donor's choice. Matthew (“Matt”) Lloyd Hurlbut, age 63, entered into eternal rest on Friday, November 17, 2023 due to a sudden cardiac event at his home in Elgin, Ia.

Matt was born in Iowa City, Ia. on May 25, 1960 to Dr. Donald and Luann Baade Hurlbut. Most of his childhood was in Elkader and Decorah, Ia., graduating from Decorah High School in 1979. He attended Northeast Iowa Community College for Dairy Science and later obtained a degree from Iowa Lakes Community College in Vocational Rehabilitation.

Matt was married to Michelle Meyer Blietz, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader, Ia. on December 15, 1990, joined by her two sons; Brandon and Joshua Blietz. They were blessed with a daughter, Jorden Rose Hurlbut, on July 18, 1996.

 James Franklin Weber, 87, of West Union, Ia., passed away Thursday evening, November 23, 2023 at his home.

 Jim was born September 25, 1936, to Myron and Frances Cannon Weber.

 In August 29, 1958, Jim married Carolyn Koch at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye, Ia. Jim and Carolyn farmed the first seven years, moving to West Union, Ia.,  in December 1965. Jim then worked for Carpenter & Kraft doing construction. After a few years doing construction he started driving truck for the West Union Coop and Garvin LP Gas.

 Jim was a volunteer fireman on the West Union Department from 1970 through 1996.

 fter his retirement from Garvin LP Gas, he started volunteering at the West Union Recreation Park, continuing for 20 years. He loved the park and was very proud of the accomplishments that were made.

John Irwin Yauslin, 88, of Clermont, Iowa passed away Monday, November 20, 2023 surrounded by his children at Stoney Brook Village, West Union, Iowa. John, the son of Byron and Ruby (Hader) Yauslin, was born October 4, 1935 at home in Clermont, Iowa. John graduated from Valley High School in 1953. During high school he worked as a farm hand for farmers in the Clermont area. He worked at the Clermont Pin Factory for a short time and retired after 40 years as a mechanic at Wilbur Ford Sales in West Union, Iowa.

John was united in marriage with Janice Larson on September 25, 1955 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union four children were born, Janann, Jeffrey, Jamey and Jerry.

Delores Opal Everett, 93 of Elgin, Iowa passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at Stoney Brook in West Union, Iowa. Delores was born July 26, 1930 to Oliver and Reva (Swenson) Torkelson in Elgin, Iowa. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1947, attended Upper Iowa and graduated with a BA in 1973. She started teaching when she was eighteen years old at country school and taught for over thirty years at Valley Community Schools, retiring in 1992.

JoAnn Sue (Horsman) Christen

JoAnn Sue (Horsman) Christen

JoAnn Christen, 77 of Marshalltown passed away on Monday, November 20, 2023 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. JoAnn was born to Keith and Alice Horsman on January 2, 1946, at the Emmetsburg Hospital. Growing up she first attended school at Rolfe before moving to Mallard, from which she graduated high school. She then went to college at Morningside in Sioux City, graduating with a major in elementary education and a minor in business.

JoAnn was a gifted and well-loved teacher, sharing her talents with communities in Keokuk and South Tama before spending 35 years as a kindergarten teacher in the Garwin and Green Mountain-Garwin (GMG) schools.  While at GMG, she had the distinct advantage of teaching in the only air-conditioned classroom in the district: the bus barn, where the kids could also make a great deal of noise without disturbing other classes and teachers.

Jerry Vernon Robbins, 64 of Elgin, Iowa passed away Friday, November 3, 2023 at WinnMed in Decorah, Iowa. Jerry was born July 23, 1959 to Charles and Laverne (Stock) Robbins in McGregor, Iowa. He graduated from Central High School in Elkader, Iowa with the Class of 1977.

Throughout the years, Jerry worked sanitation in Volga City, worked odd jobs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and most currently did a paper route in the Elgin and Clermont area for the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Jerry was an avid sports watcher and was a huge fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds.

Surviving Jerry are his siblings, Blanche (Bruce) Kraus of Arlington, Iowa and Larry Robbins of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Vivian Catherine (Bodensteiner) Hemesath, 89, of Ossian, IA, peacefully passed in the morning hours of November 13, 2023. Vivian was born on July 10, 1934, to parents John S. Bodensteiner and Katherine "Rena" A. (Meinert) Bodensteiner of St. Lucas, IA. Vivian graduated from St. Luke's High School in 1952 and married Francis J. Hemesath on August 30, 1955. A woman of remarkable resilience and spirit, her life was the embodiment of dedication and love for her family. Her intelligence, kind heart and wit, led her to bring joy and laughter to those around her, even in her final days. Vivian's love, wisdom and cherished memories will forever be remembered and live on through her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Ovation Heartwood Preserve, whose amazing love, care and attention allowed Vivian to live her last days with joy, compassion and dignity.
