Vernon H. Arthur, 68, of Waverly, Iowa, passed away suddenly on Thursday evening, February 21, 2019 at his home, of natural causes.

       Vern was born on December 15, 1950 in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Donna (Meyer) and Earl Arthur.  He grew up on the Arthur family dairy farm near Maynard, Iowa.  He was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Maynard and was active in 4-H, FFA, football, basketball and baseball.  Following graduation from West Central High School, in 1969, Vern attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he received a baseball scholarship as a pitcher.  Following his education, Vern began his lifelong career in the concrete construction industry.  He worked for Hawkins and Kiewit in Omaha before moving to Waverly Iowa in 1989.  In Waverly, Vern worked for Cedar Valley Corp., Rainbow Concrete and finally Croell Redi-Mix, where he was employed at the time of his passing.

Mick Nagle, 69, of Wadena, died unexpectedly Sunday, February 24, 2019, at his home in rural Wadena.

Memorial Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Volga with Rev. John Haugen officiating. Inurnment will follow at Wadena Cemetery with military rites provided by the American Legion of Wadena. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 1st at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Fayette and for one hour preceding services at the church on Saturday. Fayette native Dorothy Lambert Doughty died January 18, 2019 in DeKalb, IL.  She was 100 years and four months old.  She was the longest-living person in her extended family.  She was a sister of the late Robert Lambert of Fayette, and an aunt of Kathie Lambert Cybela of Fayette.  Other area survivors are Gary Lambert of Stanley, Nathan Damge of Oelwein, and Margaret Doughty Damge, of Stanley.  

Dorothy Lambert Doughty was born September 21, 1918 in Fayette, a daughter of Elsie Mae Chittenden Lambert and George Grover Lambert.  She graduated from Fayette High School in 1936.   She later attended nursing school in Chicago, but it closed due to the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Arlene Alley, 95, of Vinton and formerly of Hawkeye, died Saturday, February 23, 2019, at the Vinton Lutheran Home. 

 

  Funeral services were held at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2019, at the United Methodist Church in Hawkeye with Mona Christie, Lay Servant, officiating. Visitation will precede the service at the church on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 p.m. Friends and family were invited to join in a meal following the service.  Inurnment will be held at Dunham Grove Cemetery, rural Randalia, at a later date. Sharon Suckow, walked into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on the afternoon of Thursday, February 21, 2019.  It was her 76th birthday.

Born in Iowa in 1943, Sharon was the daughter of the late LaVern and Bessie Nelson Palas.  She was a devoted homemaker who loved the Lord and her family dearly.  Sharon was a devoted member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church where she was on the Alter Guild. 

In addition to her parents, her husband of 45 years, Gerald Lester Suckow; and nephew, Christopher Palas, preceded her in death.

Sharon’s memory will forever be treasured by her loving sons, Bradley Suckow (Lisa) of King George, Virginia and Craig Suckow (Gina) of Perry; grandchildren, Nichole (Rabun), Natalie (Chris), Kalib (Mallory), Kaylee, Christopher, Adelynn, and Leah; sister, Mary Guyer; brother, David Palas; and several loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

Neva Mae Jaster, 97, of Ossian, Iowa died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019 at Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian, Iowa. She was born May 11, 1921 to Bernard and Edna (Hein) Waters at home in Clayton County. Neva attended country school near Postville, Iowa, graduated from Postville High School, earned her teaching certificate and began teaching country school until she was married.

Daryle J. Fox, 94, of Fayette, Iowa died Sunday morning, February 24, 2019 at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union, Iowa.

Funeral Service: will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, February 28, 2019 at the Wadena Community Church in Wadena, Iowa.

Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the church and for one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

Interment will be in the Wadena Cemetery, Wadena.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Palmer Hospice or to the family for planting new tree seedlings.

Marlene Jean Horan, 82, of Stanley passed away on Friday, February 8, 2019 at MercyOne Hospital in Oelwein, Iowa. Visitation was held from 4-7 pm on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein where there was a Parish Rosary at 3:45 pm. Funeral services began at 11:00 am on Wednesday February 13, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein with Father Ray Atwood officiating. Jeffrey Dean Marvin, 59, passed away after a sudden illness on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

 

Jeffrey was born July 16, 1959 in West Union, Iowa to Robert and Mary Kay (Swenson) Marvin.  He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1977 and attended Iowa State University.  Jeff’s family was important to him.  He loved people and made friends easily.  He remained a fan of Iowa State athletics and enjoyed attending the Downtown Farmers’ Market.  Jeff was a member of the Masons and Shriners.  He appreciated and was drawn to Native American culture and collected many items of significance.  He was loving and sentimental and saved memorabilia from important moments in his life.
