Julia Ann (Pettit) Martin, 92, of Elgin, Iowa passed away Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Maple Crest Manor Nursing Home in Fayette.  

She was born on March 27, 1927 in Independence, Iowa to Pearly and Margaret (Lane) Pettit. She was baptized at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, Iowa and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing, Iowa.  Judy attended several years at Village Creek Country School, finished grade school at Immaculate Conception School and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1945. After high school, she worked as a typist at Lansing Co for several years.

Judy was united in marriage with Giles Martin, son of Melvin and Mary (McCoy) Martin on February 11, 1947, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and they spent their married life in Elgin. They first farmed and later built the family home in town where their youngest son resides.

Roger Conner, 61, of Fayette, died Friday, May 3, 2019, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, surrounded by his loving family.

 

A celebration of Roger’s life will be held at Klocks Island Park in Fayette starting at 5:00 p.m., Friday, May 10, 2019. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Fayette is assisting Roger’s family.

     Ryan “Easy Money” Lee Upton, 46, of Waucoma, Iowa died Sunday, April 28, 2019, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Ryan was born November 5, 1972 to Ronald and Linda (Kamaus) Upton in Iowa City, Iowa. He attended North Fayette High School, earned his GED from NICC and then attended John Deere Tech.

    Ryan spent many years as a truck driver, with the majority of his recent career driving for Lynch Livestock Express. He was a dedicated member of the Postville Fire Department and an enthusiastic advocate for Epilepsy Awareness in support of his great niece. In his spare time, Ryan enjoyed fishing, racing, watching Chicago Fire on TV, riding dirt bikes and four wheelers and eating good food. His greatest joy was spending time with his children.

   Ellen Halverson, age 77, of West Union, IA, died on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at her home in West Union, IA.  

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the Madison Lutheran Church, 2658 Madison Road, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Jeff Hansen presiding.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2019 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Ave in Decorah and also after 10:00 a.m. at the Church on Saturday morning.  The Schluter-Balik Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Elizabeth “Liz” Covington, 72, of Long Prairie, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 27, 2019.  Funeral services for Liz were held on Thursday, May 2, 2019, 5:00 p.m., at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie with Fr. Omar Guanchez and Deacon Jim Schulzetenberg officiating.  Interment was held at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery, Long Prairie.

A memorial service will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado, Iowa on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held two hours before the service at the church. Burial will be in St. Peter Lutheran Church cemetery following the services.

Buzz is survived by his four children, Jeffrey (Kim) Cannon, Bruce (Sherry) Cannon, Marilyn (Don) Kamaus, and Scott (Lori) Cannon; thirteen grandchildren and their spouses, many great-grandchildren; his brother, Larry Cannon; brother-in-laws, Arnold Gibbs and Bud (Judy) Vagts; and  many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Undesignated memorials sent to the family will be used to establish a NFV FFA scholarship.

William Gene Konichek (AKA Moose) died April 23, 2019 at the VA Hospital surrounded by family, following a long battle with MS.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. April 29, 2019, at Miller Funeral Home Southside Chapel, Sioux Falls, SD. His cremated remains will be spread on Mt Deborah in Alaska where his heart was.

William Philips

William “Bill” Lawrence Philips passed away peacefully on April 16th, 2019 in Spring Hill, Florida with his family by his side.   Bill was born on October 6th, 1937 in Decorah, IA to Lawrence “Speed” and Norma Fritz Philips.

Bill attended school in West Union, IA graduating in 1955.   He attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, IA.  While in the area he was a volunteer in the West Union Fire Department.   During this time, he served with his father and grandfather making three generations of Philips ‘serving together in West Union.
