Larry Riley

Larry Riley

 

 

Lawrence M. Riley, 80, of Fayette died Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at the Oelwein Health Care Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m. Saturday April 8, 2017, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette with Rev. Dale Rausch officiating.

Interment followed at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Cemetery.

Lawrence Matthew, son of John H. and Edna C. (Sloan) Riley was born Jan. 12, 1937, at the hospital in West Union, Iowa.

He was baptized and confirmed at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union.

Larry received his education at St. Mary’s in Waucoma and Donnan country schools before graduating from West Union High School in 1954.

Carolyn Havenstrite, 77, of West Union, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at Gundersen Health Systems in La Crosse, Wis.

Carolyn Jean, the daughter of Clair and Evelyn (Paulson) Anderson, was born June 22, 1939, on a farm northeast of West Union.

She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union.

She graduated from North High School in 1957.

Carolyn was united in marriage with Wayne Havenstrite on Oct. 18, 1957, at the Wesleyan Church in West Union.  To this union four children, Nancy, Jeff, Teresa, and Tim, were born.

Leo Lehman

Leo Max Lehman, 86, of Elgin passed away Friday, April 7, 2017, at Mayo Health System, La Crosse, Wis.

He was born on the family farm southeast of Elgin on June 3, 1930, to Max and Lillian (Frieburghaus) Lehman.

Leo was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, Elgin, where he was dedicated and baptized. He spent time each day reading his Bible. In his early years he taught Sunday school, and he served as chairman of the finance committee, was a member of the advisory board, and was always available to assist with various jobs around the church.

Leo attended Elgin Public High School, graduating with the class of 1948.

He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he trained in the Fleet Marine Force – 3rd Marine Brigade. At this time he was handpicked with 250 other men for a raiding party and trained under General Chesty Puller.

Larry Clipperton

Larry Clipperton

 

 

Larry Dean Clipperton, born on Jan. 10, 1942, in West Union, IA to Clifford and Beth (Zeller) Clipperton, died on March 7, 2017 at age 75, in LaCrosse, WI, due to complications from a heart attack. 

His passing was preceded by his mother, father, sister Nancy, and daughter Cari Lynn. 

Larry is survived by his wife Hildegard of Bloomfield, IA, his brother Gary (Marge) Clipperton of Ventura, CA, his children Mark Clipperton of Kansas City, MO, Penny Hertges of Ossian, IA, Paula (Brad) Johnson of Clayton, IA, Joel Clipperton of Denver, CO, grandchildren Dillon Knox of Elgin, IA, Harmony Clipperton of Kansas City, MO, Matthew and Sarah Hertges of Ossian, IA, and one great grandchild, Presleigh Clipperton of Kansas City, MO.

A graduate of North High School in West Union, Larry lettered in football, ran track, and wrestled.

Kenneth Amundson

Edwin Kenneth (Kenny) Amundson of Clermont, Iowa, passed away on April 5, 2017, at the age of 87.

He was born on the family farm outside of Clermont on July 11, 1929, to Ole and Nina (Loftsgard) Amundson.

He was a lifetime member of West Clermont Lutheran Church where he was baptized, confirmed, and married.

Kenny graduated from Clermont High School where he played basketball. His senior five-member team came up one game short of going to the State tournaments that year.

Kenny served his country oversees in Korea during the Korean War as a Corporal Army Medic in the 25th Division Medical Company 35th Infantry Regiment. He was drafted in January 1952 and was honorably discharged on October 1953.

Dr. Michael Charles (Mike) Hollen, 71, of Waterloo, died at UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital on Friday, March 24, 2017.

  He was born on June 3, 1945 in Waverly, Iowa, son of James and Lucille (Thompson) Hollen.

Dr. Hollen married Joni Andersen in Iowa City on May 3, 1969.

He graduated from Winterset High School in 1963; Michael then attended Iowa State University and the University of Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1969. He received his Orthodontics training at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and graduated in 1976.

Dr. Hollen practiced as an Orthodontist in Waterloo starting in 1976 from his office location on Kimball Avenue, and expanded to a West Union location in the late 1980s. Through the years he provided service to thousands of patients throughout the Cedar Valley and surrounding areas.

Marie D. Fay, age 92, of Dubuque, Iowa, and formerly of West Union, Iowa, was called home peacefully at 4:55 a.m. on Sunday, March 26, 2017, at Stonehill Care Center, surrounded by her loving family.  

To honor Marie’s life, funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, June 9, 2017, at the Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Road, Dubuque, with Rev. Joseph Hauer officiating.  

Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.  

Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, Dubuque, is in charge of arrangements.

Marie was born on Dec. 25, 1924, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Henry Alphonse and Clara (Shirmer) Begley. 

Marie was raised in Dubuque and was a proud graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy, Class of 1942.

Rodney Welsh, 74, of rural Lawler died Saturday, April 1, 2017, at his home following a lingering illness. 

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Hawkeye Cemetery in Hawkeye.

Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye is in charge of arrangements.

 Richard Donald “Dick” Erickson, 85, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Thursday, March 30, 2017, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.

 Funeral services were held Monday, April 3, 2017, at Richardson Funeral Service, Cedar Falls, with Pastor Gary Olson, New Aldaya Lifescapes, Cedar Falls, officiating. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Cedar Falls.

 Dick was born April 18, 1931, in West Union, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Agnes (Hanson) Erickson. On October 11, 1958, he was united in marriage to Carol J. Rogelstad in Las Vegas, Nevada. Carol preceded him in death on May 24, 2003.

 Dick graduated from West Union High School and served in the United States Marines. He was employed in delivery with Alstadt and Langlas Baking Company.
