Marlene Jean Horan, 82, of Stanley passed away on Friday, February 8, 2019 at MercyOne Hospital in Oelwein, Iowa. Visitation was held from 4-7 pm on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein where there was a Parish Rosary at 3:45 pm. Funeral services began at 11:00 am on Wednesday February 13, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein with Father Ray Atwood officiating. Burial was in St. Peter Catholic Cemetery at Clermont, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established. For condolences, please visit www.geilenfeldfh.com

Jeffrey Dean Marvin, 59, passed away after a sudden illness on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

 

Jeffrey was born July 16, 1959 in West Union, Iowa to Robert and Mary Kay (Swenson) Marvin.  He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1977 and attended Iowa State University.  Jeff’s family was important to him.  He loved people and made friends easily.  He remained a fan of Iowa State athletics and enjoyed attending the Downtown Farmers’ Market.  Jeff was a member of the Masons and Shriners.  He appreciated and was drawn to Native American culture and collected many items of significance.  He was loving and sentimental and saved memorabilia from important moments in his life.

Gregory Allen Stillman, 55, of St. Lucas, Iowa died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, at his home in St. Lucas, Iowa. 

Gregory was born February 18, 1963 to Paul James and Marion L. (Alton) Stillman in Grundy Center, Iowa. He graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1981 and received his diploma for Carpentry at NICC. Greg worked for Dessels Furniture and also did carpentry jobs. He had been a member of Gospel Hall in West Union, Iowa. In his spare time, Greg enjoyed hunting morel mushrooms, rooting on his Cowboys, fishing and playing cards with friends and spending time with family and loved ones.

Walter Bernard Knutsen, 84, of Clermont, Iowa passed away peacefully on Friday, Feb. 8, 2019 at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, Iowa.

Walter was born on December 18, 1934 to Knut and Amanda (Osterhus) Knutsen in Seattle, Washington. He was baptized on February 15, 1935. Walter’s family moved to a farm south of Ossian at age eleven. He attended Bethel Lutheran Church, went to school in West Union and worked on the family farm.

Lillian Elvira Gunderson, 92, of Clinton, Iowa formerly of Clermont, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, at Eagle Point Care Center in Clinton, Iowa.

Lillian Elvira was born April 22, 1926 on a farm in Kenyon, Minnesota to Emil and Tillie (Reierson) Johnson. She attended country schools in Kenyon, Minnesota and also Dry Run in St. Olaf, Iowa, public school in Elkader, Iowa and graduated from Clermont High School.

Lillian was united in marriage with Martin Gunderson in August 1951 in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Before she was married, Lillian worked at Penick and Ford Factory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and another factory in Minnesota. After she was married, Lillian was a homemaker. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, scrapbooking, vegetable and flower gardening, writing to her thirty to forty pen pals, collecting rebates, listening to Polka music, traveling and fishing with her husband, Martin.

Vernita Pape, 99, of Maynard and formerly of Stanley, Iowa died Tuesday evening, Jan. 29, 2019 at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, at Stanley Union Church, Stanley, Iowa, with Rev. Philip Rownd officiating. Visitation was held from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein and for one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

Interment was at the West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa.

Robert Dennler

Robert William Dennler (Bob), 87, of Elkader, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, at the Elkader Care Center. He was surrounded by family and friends.  Bob was born February 15, 1931, in Volga, Iowa, to Elmer and Amanda (Mueller) Dennler. Bob attended country school until 8th grade. He served in the US Army as a medic from 1953 to 1954.   During that time he was stationed in France and Germany.

On November 10, 1956, Bob was united in marriage to Jane Neylan. Five children were born to this union. He and Jane, along with their children, farmed outside of Elkader until 2003. During this time and their retirement they enjoyed playing cards, visiting the boat, and sharing in their grandchildren’s various activities. In 2014, Bob and Jane moved to the assisted living in Elkader where they enjoyed having visitors and getting to know the staff.  Bob served as a Boardman Township trustee for over 30 years.

     DeVere Manderfield, 90, of St. Lucas, IA died Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Wellington Place in Decorah, IA.  Eugene DeVere was born September 22, 1928 to William and Celia (Kurash) Manderfield in Waucoma, IA.  He attended school in a one room schoolhouse in Chickasaw County through the eighth grade.
