Robert "Bob" Louis Cowles

Robert "Bob" Louis Cowles

Robert “Bob” Louis Cowles, 91, of Ossian went to be with the Lord on October 21, 2023. He passed away at his home on a beautiful fall day, doing what he loved most—farming.

Bob was born on November 12, 1931 to Lulu (Miller) and Park Cowles, and was the second of five children. He attended Dover Township School, a one-room schoolhouse. In 1939, the Cowles family purchased land south of Ossian and Bob farmed there until the day he died. Over the course of his life he farmed corn and beans, milked cows and raised hogs and beef cattle.  He enjoyed riding horses in his younger days and always had food or a treat (and maybe even a pet, if he could get close enough!) for the barn cats.

Robert Zurbriggen

Robert Zurbriggen

Robert Paul Zurbriggen died Tuesday, September 26th in his home in Palm Springs, California.  He was a unique, independent individual and, thus, deserves a unique tribute.  Bob was all about experiences, especially if they involved interesting people.

Bob was born March 11, 1945 to Paul B. and Helen R. Zurbriggen of Elgin, IA.  He loved his childhood years growing up amidst his extended family of grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins.  The Muehlethaler furniture store and funeral home were his playground.  His Uncle Lorence taught him about electronics and the television repair business by the age of nine.  During some of his last conversations, Bob would fondly recall his close relationships with cousins Bev and Barb.  He claimed to have taught Barb how to play competitive pool on their grandfather’s snooker table; the same table would serve for the family production of sauerkraut in the late summer.
