Diann K. Hayes, 71, of Lamont, Iowa, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2019 in her home following a long illness with COPD. 

A Celebration of Life is planned for friends and family on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the community center in Arlington, Iowa.  

Diann was born on December 22, 1947 in Manchester, Iowa to Joseph and Viola (Moorman) Klein.  She was raised in rural Dundee, Iowa and graduated from Manchester High School in 1966.  On March 28, 1992, Diann was united in marriage to Thomas Hayes at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.  Diann was an office manager for many years and also helped her husband on their farm.  She loved to paint ceramics, cook, do lawn care, travel, especially around Iowa, and had a passion for sewing.

Gary Herman Helgerson, 72, of Elkader, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019, at Patty Elwood Center, Country Winds Manor in Cresco following a brief illness due to dementia. He was born August 28, 1946, in West Union, to Herman and Marian (Schatz) Helgerson.

Gary graduated from Valley High School in 1964. He went on to UNI at Cedar Falls, where he earned his Industrial Arts – Education Degree, graduate in 1968, later he attended Central Missouri State where he earned his Master’s Degree in 1970.  Gary went on to teach Industrial Arts and Drivers Ed at Tripoli High School for 10 years, before moving to Elkader to become a State Farm Insurance Agent, a position held for 39 years until he retired in 2017.

He married Kae Jeanne Thompson. Three sons were born to this union. They later divorced.

Adeline Meier, 88, of Clermont, Iowa died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital, West Union, Iowa.  Adeline was born January 5, 1931, to Arthur and Reta (Nace) Wilken in Strawberry Point, Iowa. She graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1949 and went to work at Union Bank and Trust in Strawberry Point. While working there Adeline met Lloyd Meier, who worked at Security State Bank in Guttenberg, Iowa.

     Bring your best memories and stories to share as the family of Gene Klinge celebrates his life on Jan. 26 at 1:30 p.m. in a place very special to him, the gymnasium which bears his name at West Central Community School in Maynard, Iowa. The family is looking forward to visiting with everyone prior to the service from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

     In spirit of the occasion, the family requests those attending wear their favorite school apparel, be it Blue Devil blue, Indian orange, Hawkeye black and gold or even Minnesota Viking purple or camouflage would be appropriate. If you’d rather, feel free to wear his signature red or orange socks in his honor.

Charles Eugene Schott, 64, of West Union Iowa died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019 at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, Iowa.  Charles was born August 24, 1954 to Lawrence Leon and Doris Marie (Nyborg) Schott in West Union, Iowa.  He was baptized at Wesleyan Methodist Church in West Union, Iowa.  Charles went to North and Valley Schools, and later earned his GED.

Charles was united in marriage with Betty Doubek on April 27, 1974. One son was born to this union.  Charles was a farm manager at Wilbur Farms in West Union and worked at Pro Earth Environmental in West Union, Iowa. He retired in 2014 due to health reasons.  Charles was a member of the Clermont Activity Club, West Union Jaycees, Fayette County Fair Board, Holy Name Catholic Church and St. Francis of Assisi. He enjoyed hunting deer and turkey, fishing, bowling, riding motorcycles, playing cards, golfing and softball leagues.

Margaret (Crider) Keith, 96, died on December 21 at home in La Grande, Oregon, surrounded by her family.  A funeral service was held on December 28 at Trinity Baptist Church in La Grande.

She was born on June 2, 1922 in Elgin, Iowa, the eldest of four children to Ray and Frieda Crider.

Harry LaVerne Butikofer, 101, of Elgin passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019, at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital, West Union, following a long life and a brief illness.  He was born November 10, 1917, at home on the family farm immediately south of Elgin to Albert and Marie (Schupbach) Butikofer.  Harry attended Cheery Valley country school in rural Clayton County.

Harry was united in marriage to Rose Marie Dennler on August 17, 1943, at the Baptist Parsonage in Elgin.  Six children were born to this union.  Together Harry and Rose farmed and operated a commercial painting business for fifty-five years.  Prior to and following operating their own farm, Harry worked as a farm hand, ultimately planting and harvesting crops from NE Iowa to Texas.  He was also a highly skilled carpenter.  In 1977, Harry and Rose built a new home on their small man-made lake and moved there, just up the road from their home farm.

Sandra K. Lau, 58, of Fayette, died Sunday, January 6, 2019, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Memorial Mass was held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, January 11, 2019 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette. Visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 10th, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Fayette and for one hour preceding the Mass on Friday at the church. There was a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.beckermilnesrettig.com.

Mary Richmond, 89, of Hawkeye, Iowa, died Thursday, January 3, 2019, at the Buchanan County Hospital, Independence, Iowa.

Mary was born December 21, 1929 at Hawkeye to Frank J.A. and Alona (Korupp) Huber.  She graduated from Hawkeye High School, Mount Mercy Junior College, Upper Iowa University, and the University of Iowa with a Master of Arts degree in Music.

She taught at Bethel (one-room school), Hawkeye, Alpha, West Union, and Chariton public schools, and was Assistant Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Department at Upper Iowa University.

Mary met her spouse at Hawkeye, Iowa. George and Mary were married in 1949 at St. Anthony’s Smallest Church near Festina, Iowa. They lived in Hawkeye, Fayette, and Chariton communities in Iowa. After retirement, they returned to Hawkeye, Iowa.
