When the Fayette City Council met Monday night, June 6, it learned that Councilmember Todd Sorensen’s last meeting will be June 20, as he is moving outside the city.

After thanking Sorensen for his service, Mayor Andrew Wenthe commented, “Similar to last time, what I’d like to do is have councilmembers identify who is interested in being considered. Then we can decide if a special election is necessary if there is more than one candidate interested.”

The council agreed to a deadline of July 1 for councilmembers to let the mayor know the names of potential candidates.

The council heard a recommendation from Police Chief Rich Pisanti to hire Ben Davis, 28, as the city’s police officer. Davis, a North Fayette High School graduate, has experience as an MP while serving in the U.S. Army and is currently a police officer in Strawberry Point.

The West Union City Council went into closed session to discuss the West Union Police Department at its regular Monday meeting, June 6.

At-large Councilmember Isaiah Stansbery moved for a closed session after asking West Union Police Chief Dylan Schauer if that was okay with him. However, Mayor Kent Halverson was dissatisfied that Stansbery didn’t follow the proper channels by first going to the Police Committee or at least bringing his concerns up with the mayor, who is the head of the police department.
