Troy Shaffer

Troy Shaffer

Troy Lynn Shaffer was born April 24, 1968, to Stan and Sharon (Schupbach) Shaffer, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. When Troy was four, his family moved to Elgin. He was a 1986 graduate of Valley High School, he went on to attend University of Sioux Falls, then grad school at North American Baptist Seminary.

On August 18, 2001, he was united in marriage to Susan Evans at Trinity Baptist Church in Sioux Falls. To this union they were blessed with four children: Megan, Jacob, Mykenzy and Jordan.

While he was in school, he worked for Nash Finch Company as an assistant store manager for 10 years. After earning his Masters of Divinity degree, he worked as youth pastor at Trinity Baptist Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, 1998-2002. He then joined the First Priority Ministry as a parachurch associate. Troy and Susan welcomed Megan into their family December 2002. He felt called to pastor a church so they moved to Corydon, Iowa in 2004 and began ministry at First Baptist Church. That fall, Jacob was born.  Jordan and Mykenzy joined the family in January 2007, completing the family of six!

The family moved to Grimes in July 2010, and Troy worked for Wells Fargo and Shazam until 2017. He felt called to return to vocational ministry so began a yearlong chaplain residency at Iowa Methodist in Des Moines. In September 2018, he joined the Vermeer chaplain team in Pella, Iowa and the family moved soon after. He loved his job at Vermeer and all the people he could share the love of Jesus with.

Troy enjoyed woodworking and building so he built a second garage at their home. He also enjoyed working on vehicles and riding his motorcycle.  Troy loved attending his kids’ sports, going to professional baseball, basketball and football games and was an avid Hawkeyes and Cubs fan. He also enjoyed helping with youth at church, and talking to anyone and everyone. He cared for and loved people very much!  Troy will also be remembered for his sense of humor, hunting and fishing with his boys, and spending time with his girls by shopping with them.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Susan and their children: Megan, Jacob, Mykenzy and Jordan; his parents Stan and Sharon Shaffer of Elgin, his siblings: Kim (Dean) Snyder of Sarasota, Florida, their children Bryce (Danielle) and Kaylynn; Trent (Brenna) Shaffer of Riverside, Iowa, and their children Mitchell and Michaela; his parents-in-law Larry and Nancy Evans of Pella, Susan’s siblings: David Evans of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Julie Evans of West Des Moines, and many other family members. Troy was preceded in death by a child in infancy.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 10, 2021, at the Liberty Evangelical Free Church in Pella. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 6:00 pm, Friday, April 9, also at Liberty Evangelical Free Church with family present.
