Imelda Schmitt

 

Imelda was born on April 9, 1933 in New Hampton, Iowa. 

She departed this earthly life suddenly on Tuesday, February 2, 2021.

Sunday, February 7, 2021, visitation was observed from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.,  Rosary at 12:30 p.m. and Scripture Service at 3:30 p.m. at the Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home in West Union.  Funeral Mass was held Monday, February 8, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Name Parish in West Union, celebrant Fr. Carl Schmitt.  Internment followed at Mount Calvary Cemetery. 

Imelda was the daughter of William and Rose (Rosonke) Schwickerath. She was united in marriage to Henry Schmitt on May 22, 1956 at the Immaculate Conception Parish, in North Washington, Iowa.

Imelda was blessed with seven wonderful children and made their home on a dairy farm near Hawkeye, and in later years in West Union. She earned her GED at NICC and worked at Steege’s Pharmacy for many years. Many admired her annual and thriving garden, even the rabbits. Her harvest was shared with neighbors, friends and family. Her tulips yielded much pleasure and approval.

Imelda valued and cared for her family, her dedication to them was her greatest love. Her knowledge and understanding of all her siblings, children, grandchildren and great-grand children was amazing. Many will miss her beautiful handwritten well informed letters and cards. She looked forward to her coffee dates with her friends, monthly birthday club and visits to see family.

Imelda was a lifelong parishioner of the Holy Name Parish in West Union. She was a member of the Rosary Society, and the Catholic Daughters of America.

Imelda is survived by six of her children: Ken Schmitt (MaryAnn) from Texas; Theresa Kapler (Rich), Roger Schmitt (Teresa) from Hawkeye; Mary Hemesath (Russell) from Clermont; Steven Schmitt (Connie) & Diane Schmitt from Hawkeye. 17 grandchildren and (11 great-grandchildren]: Jennifer, Alex, Lauren (Veronica), Julia; Joy (Serenity, Harmony, Phoenix), Kelsey (Jezreel, Eden), Destiny; Timothy,

Rachel; Emily (Chloe), Amy (Zoey), Lucas (Wyatt, Caleb, Everly), Molly; Becca, Ben, Belle & Brian. Her sibings Coletta Geerts (Dan), Joe Schwickerath (RoseAnn) from New Hampton; Imogene Attig from Twin Lakes, Jane Schwickerath from Waseca and several nieces, nephews. Imelda also leaves many devoted church members & friends to cherish memories.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother William & Rose Schwickerath; husband, Henry; daughter, Joyce; granddaughter, Beth Hemesath; brothers Gerald, Denis and sisters Norma and Elaine.
