August “Augie” D. Bindert, 84, of Hawkeye, died Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

Visitation was held from 1  to 4 p.m., Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Inurnment will be held at a later date. August Delmar, son of Fred “Fritz” and Hildegard (Plamp) Bindert was born October 4,1936, in Stickney, South Dakota. He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith in South Dakota and later confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Augie received his education in the rural Hawkeye Country Schools and graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1954. 

On May 16, 1958, he was united in marriage with Patricia Lawless at Trinity Lutheran Church. Augie began his professional career working for farmers in the Hawkeye area before working at the Hawkeye Co-Op, Darling Co., Paul Nieman Construction, Boie Electric, and returned to Hawkeye Co-Op retiring in 1998. He would continue to help out at Hawkeye Co-Op in the fall and spring. 

Augie was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye and the Hawkeye Volunteer Fire Department for eighteen years. He also played for a local fast pitch softball team. Augie enjoyed hunting in his younger years, fishing, wood work, golfing, mowing his lawn, gardening, feeding the birds, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren and attending their events.

Augie is survived by his children, Faron (Laura) Bindert of Strawberry Point, Rowdy (Lisa) Bindert of Waverly, and Carla Bindert of Wellsburg; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchidlren; four brothers-in-law, James (Diane) Lawless of Evansdale, Kenneth (Mary) Lawless of West Union, Jeff (Theresa) Lawless of Harpers Ferry; and Les (Jan) LaLone of Hawkeye; two sisters-in-law, Connie Schlatter of Bel Aire, Kansas and Gloria Lawless of Melrose; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and mother-in-law and father-in-law, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia on April 8, 2012; and sister Delores LaLone.
