Clare M. Hillman, 81, of Maynard, Iowa, died on Tuesday morning, November 10, 2020 at his home.

Private family services will be held at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard.

Interment: Fairbank Cemetery, Fairbank, Iowa.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Clare Matthew Hillman was born on October 29, 1939 at rural Aurora, Iowa, the son of Bruce Forest and Lois Mattie (McDowell) Hillman.  He graduated from Stanley High School in Stanley, Iowa in the class of 1957.  Clare was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Polege on October 11, 1958 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Fairbank, Iowa.  

Clare worked for Thode and Rechkemmer Construction for two years.  He then worked for the Chicago Great Western Railroad from 1960 to 1968 and the Chicago Northwestern Railroad from 1970 to 1995.  Clare worked in Oelwein and Clinton on the railroad.  He also installed carpet with his brother, Ralph, for 30 years.  Clare retired in 2005.  Clare was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Maynard.  He enjoyed woodworking, golf, fishing, camping, boating and pulling water skiers.

Clare is survived by his wife: Mary Hillman of Maynard; daughter: Jeanette (Ron) Kelly of Maynard; son: Kenneth Hillman of Maynard; 2 grandsons; Matthew (Kari) Kelly of Sumner and Nathan (Jessi) Kelly of Oran; 8 great grandchildren; Camille, Kennedy, Saylor, Anderson, Hattie, Koen, MaCoy and Riya Kelly; sister:  Gail Jordan of Casa Grande, Arizona; brother:  Leslie (Alma) Hillman of Winterport, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

Clare was preceded in death by his parents; daughter: Sharon at 3 years of age; 3 brothers: Kenneth was stillborn, Raymond at age 6 years and Ralph; 4 sisters:  Arlene Larson, Carolyn Hoelscher, Lela Doyle and Norma Pleis.
