Betty Mary Spies, 90, of West Union, Iowa died Thursday, February 6, 2020 at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, Iowa. Betty was born September 9, 1929 to George and Edna (Bloomfield) Schmelzer in West Union, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union, Iowa. Betty graduated from West Union High School in 1949 and attended Upper Iowa University for one year.

Betty was united in marriage with Harold Henry Spies on September 28, 1950 at Holy Name Catholic Church. Five children were born to this union. Betty was a lifelong member of the Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters and Swinging Squares Square Dance Club. She helped with Meals on Wheels for over twenty years. Betty enjoyed gardening, square dancing, reading and cooking. Her cheesecake was legendary at reunions. Betty loved animals, especially her cats and dogs, helping nurse many animals back to health.

Surviving Betty are her five children, Gary (Patsy) Spies of Elgin, Iowa, Cathy (Paul) Trafelet of Hawkeye, Iowa, Paul (Barb) Spies of West Union, Iowa, David (Julie) Spies of St. Peters, Missouri and Mark (Joni) Spies of Hawkeye, Iowa; grandchildren, Christopher (Leigh) Spies, Stephanies Spies-Upton (Mitchel), Jeremy (Wendy) Trafelet, Jacinda (Travis) Cooley, Joshua Trafelet, Ty Trafelet, Laura Spies, Colin Spies, Heather (Josh) Tolle, Taylor (Tanner) Munkel, John (Jennifer) Spies, Justin (Litisha) Spies, Jean (Ben Welsh) Spies, Jaci Spies, Paul (Callie) Spies, Jr., and Emily Spies; and twenty-nine great-grandchildren; nieces, Susie (Gene) Heimerman and Shawn (Chris) Barrck.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Spies on September 19, 2009; her parents, George and Edna Schmelzer; a sister, Diane Holmes; and a great-granddaughter, Kaylee.

Visitation was Monday, February 10, 2020 from 4-7 pm with a 3:30 pm Catholic Daughter Rosary and a 7:00 pm Scripture Service at Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, West Union, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:00 am on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at Holy Name Catholic Church, West Union, Iowa with Rev. Don Komboh as the Celebrant.

Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, West Union, Iowa.

Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, West Union, Iowa is helping the family with the arrangements.
