The South Winneshiek girls’ basketball team began its 2019-2020 campaign with three straight road matchups against Central, MFL/MarMac, and Postville. The young Warrior team struggled to find consistency in the three Upper Iowa Conference matchups as it fell to 0-3.

Central

The Warriors opened the season Tuesday, Nov. 26, in Elkader as South Winn fell by a score of 59-22.

Central jumped out to a 19-2 lead in the first quarter before extending the lead to 39-9 at the half. South Winn kept it close in the second half, but was still outscored 20-13.

Senior Liz Tieskoetter led the team with 16 points and five rebounds. She also knocked in three treys.

Postville

South Winn came within seconds of pulling off its first win of the season, but a late Postville surge that ended with a buzzer-beater dashed the Warrior hopes.

“The girls got to know what it’s like to play a close game tonight. It came down to execution and we didn’t follow through,” said coach Kayla Ross after the loss. “The girls did a lot of good things tonight, despite the loss. This was a learning experience and I know we will continue to have our heads held high and keep fighting.”

The Warriors were led by senior Liz Tieskoetter’s 12 points. She, along with Mary Frana, each tallied five rebounds as well.
