WC volleyball has 6-3 week

It was a busy week for West Central netters last week with nine games in just five days.

Tuesday (Sept. 10), the Devils were at Maq. Valley for a quadrangular. WC won two of three games. The Blue Devils opened by beating host Maq. Valley, 25-12 and 25-23. It took three sets to down Lisbon, 19-25, 25-10 and 17-15. The finale was a rematch against MFL/MM with the Bulldogs once again prevailing, 22-25 and 17-25.

Thursday, the Devils hosted Postville, sweeping the Pirates in three sets, 25-14, 25-16, and 25-9. It was the Devils’ first conference win of the season.

Aaliyah Gordon and Bryleigh Rouse led the attack with seven and six kills, respectively; Rouse also blocked two shots, as did Abby Squires. 

Marlee Squires handed out nine assists and had 11 digs. Emma Michels led in digs with 16. 

Rouse was 21-24 serving with a team-high four assists. Gordon went 10-11 serving, dishing out two assists.

Over the weekend, WC competed in the Jesup tournament, going 3-2. The losses were in the first and final games to Jesup and Alburnett, respectively. The wins were over North Linn and UIC foes South Winn (21-11) and Central/Elkader (24-22 and 21-18).

After the week was over, head coach Abby Whittenbaugh said, “We are growing each week as a team! I’m happy with the effort my girls are giving on the court! We have areas to approve on and we will work on them this week.”

West Central starts the week with a 9-7 record. They host Turkey Valley on Thursday and will be at the West Delaware Tournament on Saturday.
