Victoria Anna Schmitt, 90, of West Union, Iowa died Friday, June 7th, 2019 at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in West Union surrounded by her family. Victoria was born on the family farm on February 6th, 1929 in rural St. Lucas, Iowa to Nick and Frances (Schaufenbuel) Kuennen. Victoria was baptized on February 7th, 1929 in St. Luke’s Church in St. Lucas. She received her education at St. Luke’s Catholic School and graduated in 1947. Victoria attended one year of nurse’s training at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Dubuque, Iowa. Victoria left nursing school prior to completion to marry her childhood sweetheart.

Victoria was united in matrimony to Bernard Schmitt on October 5th, 1950 in St. Lucas, Iowa. Together they farmed, operated the Waucoma Feed Mill, and in 1972, Victoria began her 18 year employment at the kitchens of Sara Lee in New Hampton, Iowa. In 1990, Bernie and Victoria retired to West Union, Iowa. Victoria was actively involved in the Catholic Daughters and Holy Name Parish. Victoria was well known for her cooking and baking talents, especially her pies. She shared these with her family and the Town House Café. Victoria gave generously of her time and willingness to help anyone. Hobbies included knitting, cultivating beautiful flowers, bird watching, and most of all, spending time with family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Gloria Wagner of West Union, Sally (Mike) Hensley of Waucoma, Susie (Ron) Kuennen of St. Lucas, Debbie (Gus) Kapnisis of West Union, Kathy (Brian) Dunt of West Union, Mike (Janet) Schmitt of Waucoma, Mary (Ken) Bouska of Chatfield, MN, Mark (Karen) Schmitt of New Hampton, Marlene Bouska of Hawkeye, and Marvin (Traci) Schmitt of Waucoma; 27 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren (with 4 on the way).

Victoria was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bernie Schmitt; one son, John Bernard Schmitt; grandsons Brady Kuennen and Jonathan Bouska; and son-in-laws Paul Wagner and Terry Bouska.

Family will greet friends at the Waucoma Event Center on Wednesday, June 12th, 2019 from 4-8 pm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 13th, 2019 at 11 am at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union, IA with Rev. Ivan Nienhaus.

Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in West Union, Iowa.

Iowa Cremation of Cedar Rapids is helping the family with arrangements.

Memorials in honor of Victoria may be made to her family.
