Dennis W. Copp, 66, of Sumner, and formerly of Hawkeye, died unexpectedly, Monday, June 3, 2019, at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital and Clinics in West Union. 

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 8, 2019, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. Tracy Hinkel officiating. Burial was held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday at Hawkeye Cemetery with military rites conducted by Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner. Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, June 7, 2019 at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Saturday. Dennis Wayne, son of Dale and Edith (Schultz) Copp was born September 8, 1952, at Palmer Hospital in West Union. He was baptized October 19, 1952, and confirmed April 10, 1966, both at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Dennis graduated from Sumner High School in 1970. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict from November 19, 1971, before being honorably discharged on August 8, 1973. During his service, he served as a General’s Aide to Lieutenant General Allen M. Burdett, Jr. On September 15, 1979, Dennis was united in marriage with Janet Warnke at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. To this union three children were born, Damian, Sarah, and Devin. The couple would later divorce. Dennis was a long time dairy farmer in the Hawkeye area. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and Thomas E. Woods Post #223, both in Sumner. Dennis enjoyed crocheting, and spending time with his family. His greatest joy came from helping his family and friends, and he continued his generosity by being an organ donor.

Dennis is survived by his three children, Damian (Cindy) Copp of Waukon, Sarah (Scott) Carlson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Devin Copp of Hawkeye; four grandchildren, Kayden and Kashton Copp, and Alana and Cylar Carlson; mother, Edith Copp of Sumner; three brothers, Daryl (Judy) Copp of Hawkeye, Michael (Julie) Copp of Sumner, LeAlan Copp of Hawkeye; two sisters, Sheryl (Ron) Seitsinger of Sumner and Caryl Leyh of West Union;  and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

His father, Dale, who died June 1, 1998, preceded him in death.
