Postville man sentenced for sexual abuse

On Tuesday, April 23, a Postville man was convicted in Fayette County District Court of sexual abuse in the third degree and lascivious acts with a child.

The court sentenced Wilmer Elias Soy, 20, of Postville to two 10 year sentences to be served concurrently. Soy will be turned over to the Department of Corrections.

The conviction stems from the June 4, 2018, kidnapping of two 13-year-old females by Soy. A Fayette County Sheriff’s report notes that he picked up the two females at the 100 block of East Bradford Street in West Union without the permission or knowledge of their parents. He drove the girls to a remote location north of West Union and sexually assaulted them, before returning them to West Union that same day.

The Sheriff’s Office was notified of the incident on June 6, 2018, and, after completing an investigation, arrested Soy on June 21, 2018. He was originally charged with kidnapping in the first degree, a class A felony, which can carry of maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The Domestic and Sexual Abuse Response Team (DASART) and the Sheriff’s Office provided the two female victims with resources to help them and their families throughout the process. The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.
