Richard Forde Sand

Our brother, uncle and friend, Richard Forde Sand, died March 4, 2019, in his California home. He was born January 28, 1935, to the late Nanfred and Sylvia Forde Sand. He is survived by his brother, Jake; sisters Helen Sand Schaffer (Dean); Marge Golden (Tom); Janet Pinch, and Elaine Evans (Bob). Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Verna (Bob) and Carol (Bud). Other very special survivors are his nephews, nieces and their children. Preceding him in death were his brothers, Bob, Greg and Bud, his sister Shirley Brainard, brother-in-law, Dean Schaeffer, John Brainard and nephew Bradley Brainard.

Richard graduated from Ossian Public High School in 1953, and the University of Iowa School of Pharmacy in 1958. Graduate work was achieved at USC in California.

His career as a pharmacist began at the renown Schwabs in Los Angeles. Some of his customers included Elizabeth Taylor, Natalie Wood, Walter Pidgeon and James Caan. He worked in his filed for over fifty years.

Richard constantly challenged himself both intellectually and athletically. He was a lifelong learner and reader. Richard’s passion athletically was in individual sports. Piloting a glider, skiing at Mammoth, long distance biking and windsurfing were among his favorites. He once roller-skated from Los Angles to San Diego. In 2018, he took lessons in kite sailing in Maui.

Maui was the love of his life. His family of friends there were of utmost importance to Richard. His ashes will be strewn there in 2020. Aloha, dear Richard.
