Mary Hinkel

Mary Hinkel

Mary Maxine Hinkel made the world a better place from October 3, 1941 to March 19, 2019. She had a quiet way of touching lives through her kind and generous spirit at work and especially with her family and friends. Even when she was sick, she was concerned about others and putting them first.

Mary was born in Wadena, Iowa to Donald and Vera (Hicks) Hinkel. She graduated from Clermont-Elgin-Wadena High School and worked for 52 years as the bookkeeper at the West Union grocery store under several owners.

In March 2016, she moved to Carlisle to be closer to family and cancer doctors. Thanks to wonderful care, Mary enjoyed the past three years, despite battling cancer. She loved sports, playing in her younger years and then watching them on TV. Mary liked to collect music boxes, crystal figurines, Iowa Hawkeye memorabilia, and many other things. Most of all she loved spending time with her family, often playing cards and usually winning.

Mary has joined her father and mother, Donald and Vera, stepfather Aulden Wilson, and great-niece, Allisha Candee in heaven. Those left missing her are her siblings, Donna (Roger) Candee (Carlisle, IA), Patty (Cornelius) Yearous (Arlington, IA), Jane (Jerry) Eisele (Bushnell, IL), and Jerry (Jeanie) Hinkel (Round Top, TX), many nephews, nieces, and friends.

There will be a prayer service in Carlisle and a celebration of life in West Union at a later date. Memorials will be directed to Unity Point Hospice and Taylor House. Mary’s family thanks everyone for the love and care they’ve shown. Online condolences may be made at www.petersonfuneralservice.com
