     DeVere Manderfield, 90, of St. Lucas, IA died Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Wellington Place in Decorah, IA.  Eugene DeVere was born September 22, 1928 to William and Celia (Kurash) Manderfield in Waucoma, IA.  He attended school in a one room schoolhouse in Chickasaw County through the eighth grade.

      DeVere was united in marriage with Virginia Winter on May 3, 1954 at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas, IA. He enjoyed traveling, polka dancing, playing cards, fishing and spending time with his family. DeVere was a great storyteller, telling his stories over and over again. Before retiring, he farmed and was also involved in concrete barn construction. After retirement, DeVere enjoyed spending winters in Texas. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Forresters and the National Farmers Organization. DeVere was also instrumental in forming the local KC Council and was a founding member of the St. Lucas Historical Society.

     DeVere is survived by his wife, Virginia of St. Lucas, IA; nine children, Jerry (Barb) Manderfield of Medellín, Colombia, Loren (Marilyn) Manderfield of St. Lucas, IA, Jim (Lori) Manderfield of Urbandale, IA, Dennis (Toni) Manderfield of Davis, CA, Sheila (Mike) Oswalt of Chico, CA, Sharon (Scott) Thornton of Ames, IA, Shirley (Joe) Abdo of Iowa City, IA, Sharlene (Hein) Hüpscher of Maarssen, The Netherlands and Don (Lyndsey) Manderfield of St. Lucas, IA; twenty-six grandchildren, Nick, Joel, Bryce and Cara, Kristy, Ben and Jackie, Travis, Abby and Emily, Allison, Sam and Lily, Neal and Lucas, Alex, Erin and Nate, Steven, Josh, Jon, Mike and Caleb and Reese, Logan and Raelen; fourteen great-grandchildren; Caden, Addyson, Camden, Liesl, Greta, Brantley, Beckham, Roman, Abby, Annie, Amy, Rafael and one sister, Germaine Klotz of New Hampton, IA.

     DeVere was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joe; sister, Beverly Haugen; and one grandson, Willie Manderfield.

Visitation was held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Scripture Service Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019, at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa. There was also a one hour visitation before mass at the church on Thursday.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019, at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa with Rev. Aaron Junge as the Celebrant.

Burial will be at a later date at St. Luke Catholic Cemetery, St. Lucas, Iowa.

Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of West Union, Iowa is helping the family with arrangements.
