Sylvia Peterson

Sylvia Kathryn (Rogness) Peterson was born July 18, 1923, in Ossian, Iowa, to Knut and Sophie (Watne) Rogness.

She was baptized on Aug. 8, 1923 at Stavanger Lutheran Church in Ossian, Iowa by Reverend Kristen Kvamme.

On Oct. 10, 1937, she was confirmed by Reverend Kvamme.

She attended rural school near her home through the eighth grade, then graduated from Ossian High School.

Sylvia then attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa, where she received her teaching certificate. She then went on to teach rural country school at Dover #6.

On June 5, 1943, Sylvia was united in marriage with Henry O. Peterson by Reverend V.A. Fiskerback. This union was blessed with three children, Sonja (Peterson) Streif, Steven, and Claude.

Growing up, Sylvia was active in Sunday school, Luther League, and choir. She became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in 1958. She held office in the women’s group and circle. She also attended Do-Days, where she sewed quilts that they donated to all denominations for over 30 years.

Sylvia was proud of her Norwegian heritage and in 1977, she and Henry spent an enjoyable month in Norway, visiting her father’s home and meeting first cousins for the first time. She was often requested to sing “Den store vide flock.”

She enjoyed good music, reading, baking, doing cross-stitch, and visiting with the “Ossian Lunch Bunch,” friends from high school days. Best of all was a visit from the grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Henry, in 1982; her daughter, Sonja (Peterson) Streif in 2008; great-granddaughter Hilary Streif in 2009; four sisters, Mildred Caroline (in infancy), Henrietta Storvick, wife of Alert, Esther Knutson, wife of Sever, and Mildred Johanna Rogness; and two brothers, Ruben, husband of Ruth, and Gustav, husband of Irene.

Sylvia is survived by two sons, Steven (Cheryl) and Claude; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, and friends.

On Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018 at 06:15 a.m., Sylvia, at the age of 95, went to meet her Savior. May God bless her memory.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church, West Union, Iowa.

Burial will follow at West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa.
