The South Winneshiek school board met Monday evening in Calmar with discussions highlighted by talk of an early-retirement package being offered by the district.

While the board eventually elected to table to decision of which retirement package will be offered until the November board meeting, the board stated that it will offer a package of some sort.

The board met prior to the 7 p.m. board meeting for a special work session to discuss the early-retirement package options, but admitted that it needs more information to make an educated decision.

The board will meet for another work session prior to the November board meeting and will make a decision at the next meeting.

In other news, the board approved for the district to have an Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) School Improvement Needs Assessment to help the district draft an improvement plan.

The assessment, which has been completed my multiple other area school districts, will help district officials and boardmembers get a better grasp on the students and families within the district.

Also on the agenda, the board approved additional work to the athletic complex in Calmar that will include the movement of dirt from Lake Meyer to the new facility and site of the future practice football field.

While the dirt is being donated to the district, Reilly Construction will charge $11,000 for the use of an excavator and three trucks. The dozer, which will be at the fill site, would not be charged out – saving the district approximately $2,100.

In closing, the appointments of Devin Brincks as volunteer FFA instructor, Logan Brincks as volunteer FFA instructor, Tori Hageman as a paraprofessional, Jason Panos as a custodian, Sara Schmitt as basketball cheer coach, Derek Taylor as volunteer basketball coach, and Kristin Kriener as volunteer SODA chaperone were made.

The next regular school board meeting will be Monday, Nov. 12, at 6 p.m.
