John W.D. Hofmeyer, 95, of Fayette died peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, at First United Methodist Church in Fayette with Rev. Mike Jager officiating. 

Burial followed at Grandview Cemetery in Fayette with military rites provided by American Legion Post 339 of Fayette. 

Memorials may be made in his name to the Shrine Hospital for Children in Chicago or the Permanent Endowment Fund at First United Methodist Church in Fayette.

John William Doris, son of John Jr. and Dora (Neimeyer) Hofmeyer was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Orange City, Iowa. 

He was baptized and confirmed at First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. 

John received his education in the Christian School in Orange City prior to graduating from Northwestern Academy in 1939. 

John served honorably in the United States Navy from May 22, 1943 through May 11, 1946, when he was honorably discharged. He was stationed in New London, Conn., at the main Atlantic Submarine Base. 

On Sept. 11, 1948, he was united in marriage with Elma Grace Muller at First Methodist Church in Des Moines. 

John would continue his education at Iowa State University and graduated from University of Iowa Law School in 1953. 

In May of 1954, the couple would move to Fayette, and John would begin his law practice at Hofmeyer & Anthony Law Firm. He practiced for almost 60 years, retiring in 2013. 

John was very active in the Fayette community. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 339 of Fayette, Fayette Lions Club, a dual member of Masonic Lodges, Masonic Lodge #69 of West Union and Masonic Lodge #374 of Oelwein, served on the Board of Directors at Maynard Savings Bank in Maynard for many years, was a member of the Elkader Barbershop Chorus, Board of Trustees of the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church (where he served as president for five years), and the Vintage Auto Club of El Kahir Shrine and Greeters Unit of El Kahir Shrine. 

He enjoyed playing cards, was a Master Gardener, and an avid collector of antique cars.

John is survived by his two sons, John W. Hofmeyer III and his wife, Janet, of Oelwein and Richard Hofmeyer of Fayette; four grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband, Heath Curtis, of Cedar Rapids, Dr. Joy and her husband, Christopher Koopmans, of Elmhurst, Ill., Jeanette Hofmeyer and her husband, Gustavo Martinez Miguez, of Exton, Penn., and John W. Hofmeyer IV and his wife, Brooke, PharmD., of Iowa City; six great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Alexis, and Finnigan Koopmans, and Benjamin, Jonathan, and Nathanael Martinez Hofmeyer; two sisters, Henrietta (George) Tamminga of Lombard, Ill., and Joan Bonnema of Orange City; and eight nieces, nephews and their families.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Elma, who died Feb. 18, 2010; two sisters, who died in infancy; and one brother-in-law, Marlyn Bonnema.            36u36
