“Elgin — Small Town, USA: These Are Our Roots” will be the theme for the 2019 Elgin Homecoming.

Submitting the winning theme was Elgin native Benjamin Martin, who currently attends Iowa State University for forest ecosystem management. The 2019 Elgin Homecoming Committee selected the theme of Tom and Robin Martin’s son because of its patriotic tone.

“I think we could do a patriotic theme for the parade because Elgin Homecoming is the weekend before the Fourth of July (June 28-30, 2019),” said Stephanie Hermen, 2019 Elgin Homecoming Committee member. “We could decorate with red, white and blue and possibly have fireworks. We’re still in the planning phase, but the theme allows for us to do a number of different themes.”

Martin said he came up with the theme after hearing about the contest. It took him approximately an hour of brainstorming before the theme came to him.

“I had realized Elgin Homecoming was near Fourth of July, so I thought, what better to do than a patriotic theme?” said the 2015 North Fayette Valley graduate. “I just brainstormed a few ideas and my sisters picked the one they liked best, and ‘Elgin — Small Town, USA: These Are Our Roots’ came out on top!

“Being away from home so much, I'm not as involved in the community as I once was,” he added. “So, I thought submitting a Homecoming theme would give me a chance to be more involved.”

For coming up with the winning theme, Martin will receive $50 in Elgin Bucks.

The other two themes that were submitted “Elgin: Bringing Memories Home” and “Eager Lifelong Gathering Inviting Natives.”
