Richard “Dick” Schroyer, 82, of West Union, Iowa died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017 at his home in West Union, Iowa. 

Richard Allen was born April 5, 1935 to Otto and Victoria (Stahl) Schroyer in West Union, Iowa. 

He attended West Union School. 

Dick proudly joined and served in the United States Army from Jan. 15, 1958 to Jan. 13, 1964. 

Dick earned his GED in June 1975 from Northeast Iowa Area One Technical School and also received his EMT certification in January 1976.

Dick was united in marriage with Mary Gitch on Sept. 16, 1958 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, Iowa. Two children were born to this union.

Dick worked for the Iowa DOT and for Croell Redi-Mix as a truck driver, retiring in 1999 at age 65.

Dick was a member of Abate District 23 and Zion Lutheran Church. 

He enjoyed bowling, slow pitch softball, word find puzzles and sitting on his swing under the tree. Dick could be found pumping gas for the senior citizens at All-Stop, riding his Harley and doing security at the North Fayette ballgames. He especially loved having company. 

Dick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Schroyer of West Union, Iowa; two children, Tina (Jim) Berg of West Union, Iowa and Mark (Sarah) Schroyer of Eldorado, Iowa; five grandchildren, Erick Schroyer of Eldora, Iowa, Trev (Carley Vinkemeier) Schroyer of Ossian, Iowa, Hunter Berg of West Union, Iowa, Gavin Schroyer of Eldorado, Iowa and Mason Schroyer of Eldorado, Iowa; one great-grandson, Landon Richard Schroyer of Ossian, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Victoria Schroyer; and his siblings, Robert Schroyer, George Schroyer, Gerald Schroyer, Marie “Nell” Taylor and Margaret Peterson.

A prayer service was held at Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Friday, Jan. 5, with Pastor Rusty Phillips as the Officiant.

Inurnment will be a later date at West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa.
