The results are in, and it is now official. The Ossian City Council will have a new face on it come January 2018.

In the race for two at-large spots, which featured incumbents Mitchell Holthaus and Mike Meyer as well as new challenger David Knutson, it was Holthaus (99 votes) and Knutson (90 votes) who were elected. Meyer, who was previously the longest-serving member of the Ossian City Council, received 60 votes, and two write-in votes were cast.

In the Mayoral race, incumbent Bill Green retained his seat by gaining 116 votes, with 10 votes being cast for a write-in candidate.

Around the county

In Castalia, incumbent Margaret Jones (16 votes) edged write-in candidate Jamie Smith (15 votes) for the mayoral seat, with four additional votes being cast for other write-in candidates.

In the race for a pair of at-large seats, which featured only one candidate on the ballot but garnered votes for 10 separate write-in candidates, Jamie Smith (27 votes) and write-in candidate Randy Ellis (six votes) were elected. Other write-in candidates to receive more than a single vote included Margaret Jones (two), Tom Schultz (four), Marlene Mengelsen (three), Beth Jones (four), and Lowell Corlett (two).

The final seat up for election on the ballot, an at-large seat to fill a vacancy, saw Lowell Corlett (19 votes) claim the spot over candidate Marlene Mengelsen (17 votes).

In Calmar, incumbent candidates T.J. Schissel (74 votes) and Dennis Kleve (64 votes) defeated new challenger Jason Drucker (53) to win the pair of city council seats up for election. There were an additional four scattered write-in votes cast for the vacancies.

In the race for mayor, incumbent Keith Frana was re-elected as he received a total of 98 votes, equaling over 95 percent of the votes with five additional being cast for write-in candidates.

In Spillville, the race for mayor featured only one candidate on the ballot, incumbent Michael Klimesh, who was subsequently re-elected with all 42 votes cast in his favor.

Spillville ballots also featured three candidates vying to fill three at-large city council seats. Benjamin VanHorn (40 votes), Tom Straube (35 votes), and Andrew Hackman (34 votes) will fill those vacancies, with only two scattered write-in votes recorded.

In Decorah, Lorraine Borowski received 1,403 votes to defeat Gary Rustad and his 611 votes to become mayor of the city. Borowski will become the first female mayor in Decorah when she takes office on Jan. 1, 2018.

Ross Hadly (1,202 votes) won the at-large seat over Brett Robinson (751 votes). Randy Schissel (390 votes) ran unopposed and won the Ward 1 council seat. Andy Carlson (406 votes) ran unopposed and won the Ward 3 seat, and Johanna Bergan (190 votes) defeated Charles Lore (163) for the Ward 5 seat.

In the race for Decorah City Park and Recreation Board, which had two vacancies, Cindy Albers (1,338 votes) and Shirley Vermance (1,168) defeated fellow challenger Jeff Tomlinson (772 votes) to take office.

In Fort Atkinson, Lori Jo Schroeder (46 votes) and Robert Glass (23 votes), both incumbents, were re-elected to fill two at-large seats. The two defeated a bevy of write-in candidates, including Joe Skretta (21 votes), Randy Wagner (3 votes), Nick Nienhaus (2 votes), and Sam Hageman (2 votes).

In Jackson Junction, all five council seats were filled by incumbents as Kenneth Kriener, Art Perry, Lana Schmitt, Richard Vrza, and Rodney Vrzak each received eight votes apiece.

Incumbent Mae Schmitt was also re-elected as mayor after receiving all eight votes.

In Ridgeway, which had two council seats up for election, Ethan Novotny (15 votes) and Scott Engelhardt (14 votes) were each elected and were the only candidates to receive votes.

Across Winneshiek County, which includes 7,131 registered voters, a total of 2,423 ballots were cast, making up 33.98 percent of registered voters.
