WC boys open with 7 medals

The West Central boys’ opened the outdoor track season in West Union Thursday.

Class 2A North Fayette Valley dominated the field of 1A teams. The Blue Devils finished third with 42 points, just eight behind Dunkerton.

The Devils made the most of their small numbers by winning seven medals, including two gold and three   silver.

James Niemann had a hand in both gold medals, winning the 110 hurdles and combining with Tyson Decker, Matt Langel, and Collin Kime to win the shuttle hurdle. Niemann also won a silver medal in the 400 hurdles, and Kime was the silver medalist in the 400 dash.

The 4x400 of Decker, Collin Kane, Langel and Kime brought back a silver medal, and Decker was third in the long jump. Derek Pape earned bronze in the 800 and just missed medaling in the 1600, finishing fourth.

Head coach Jordan Greco said, “It’s a challenge to move from running indoors to being outside. I thought the hurdlers did really well, especially the shuttle beating North Fayette Valley. The relays managed to get all the handoffs right, and they had good split times for such an early race. For not having a lot of practice, I thought we did pretty well.”
