Warriors fall to rival Trojans

In the final boys’ and girls’ basketball games before the holiday break, South Winn traveled just a few miles down the road to take on the Turkey Valley Trojans last Monday (Dec. 22). 

Both rival Trojan teams were able to nip the Warrior teams, taking down the girls’ team, 53-38, and then defeating the boys’ squad, 49-41.

Girls v. TV

The Turkey Valley Trojans’ girls basketball team, boasting a 7-1 record, jumped out to an early lead over the South Winn girls last Monday night and would not look back.

Despite outscoring their rivals in the second half, the Warriors were unable to make a recover from a 38-20 hole at halftime.

The Warriors were led by seniors Payton Poshusta and Brittany Shindelar, who had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Junior Rebecca Hertges led South Winn on the boards, pulling down nine rebounds on the night to go along with eight points.

Boys v. TV

The Warriors were unable to get a consistent offensive rhythm going last Monday, failing to score more than nine points for the first three quarters.

The red and white eventually fell on a cold-shooting night by a score of 49-41. Fifteen of Turkey Valley’s 49 points came from behind the three-point line.

The South Winn boys’ and girls’ teams both carry a 2-7 record into the break.

Following the break, the Warriors will be at home for six of the seven ensuing games. Both squads will return to action on Friday, Jan. 2, in Calmar as the Warriors welcome the Decorah Vikings to town.
