Harold Dean Blessing of West Union passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at his home.

He was born on August 9, 1938 in Independence, Iowa to John and Ella (Weaver) Blessing.

Following graduation from Independence High School, Harold attended Iowa State University completing his highway instrument training in 1957. He later became a licensed Land Surveyor and a Senior Engineering Technician.

After college, Harold moved to West Union and began working for Bert B Hanson and Assoc. as a land surveyor and engineer, then was employed at PIL for several years. In the 1980’s Harold and his son Blaine started a fabrication business near Hawkeye which grew over time into Blessing Industries. Now under different ownership Harold was still a part time a Job Estimator and Engineer at Blessings in Fayette, IA.

He served on the West Union Fire Department from 1959 until 1985. He enjoyed “tinkering”, especially on his hot-rod and showing it off at car shows. He also enjoyed dirt track and NASCAR racing.

Harold is survived by his daughters, Deena (Ron) Evans of Randalia and Karma (LeRoy Wooff) Knospe of West Union; sister, Dorothy (Lee) Jenkins of Kingman, Arizona; brother, Ralph (Mary Ann) Blessing of Waterloo; sister-in-law, Donna Blessing of Alaska daughter-in law, Kristine Blessing of Des Moines; grandchildren, Cory Evans, Pamela Yager, Jeremy Dewey, Valerie Koch, Ben Knospe, Trent Blessing, Trevor Blessing; great-grandchildren, Andrew Evans, Nathan Evans, Makayla Yager, Alexis Yager, Isabella Yager, Damien Koch and Kaedon Koch; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Blaine Blessing and brother Robert Blessing.

A public visitation was held from 4 pm until 7 pm at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union, Iowa on Friday, June 13, 2014. Patriot Guard Riders were in attendance at Harold's service to honor his 26 years with the West Union Fire Department.

A private family funeral service was held prior to the visitation.

S.K. Rogers Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
