A two-year veteran of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office has assumed the part-time duties of Fayette County Emergency Management coordinator. While serving as the newly hired coordinator, Deputy Michael Foland will also continue to serve the local Sheriff’s Office on a part-time basis.

“We felt this was the way to go at this specific time,” said Fayette County Emergency Management Commission chairman Wally Rundle on Monday. “We feel Deputy Foland is an excellent fit, and for someone like him to step into the position with his many, many years of training and experience is a win-win situation for everyone.”

“Some items of discussion still need to be tied up, but we are very excited that this will work out well,” agreed Sheriff Marty Fisher.

A one-year contract and 28E agreement in regard to the sharing of the deputy’s duties took effect Saturday, March 1. The arrangement is similar to that of Grundy and Wright counties in Iowa.

Foland has been involved with emergency services for 22 years. In addition to being a certified medical technician, he has been a member of the Hazleton Fire Department for 19 years, where he currently serves as assistant fire chief.

“When first informed of the opportunity by Sheriff Fisher, I was all for it,” said the 43-year-old. “I have been involved with emergency services for my entire adult life, and I’m excited to be able to step in and begin working with all officials and communities of Fayette County.”

Approximately six months ago, the Fayette County Emergency Management Commission approached the Sheriff’s Office in reference to providing part-time services for the open position. The Commission had previously dismissed former coordinator Randy Frank during its regular Sept. 17 meeting.

The Fayette County Emergency Management Agency is the operating arm of the Fayette County Emergency Management Commission. The Commission is made up of the mayor or a representative of each community, the county sheriff or his or her representative, and a member of the Board of Supervisors.
