SW gals trump Trojans, 42-30

After losing to Turkey Valley early in the season, the Lady Warriors pulled together and led for most of the 48 minutes on Friday to leave victorious, 42-30.

The first stanza was the closest of the evening, with the lead bouncing back in forth. Megan Elsbernd knotted the score, 6-6, with 2:53 remaining. It was a scoring drought for the two rivals in the closing minutes until Micole Lansing drained a trey with 30 ticks remaining to pull SW ahead, 9-6.

The Lady Warriors gained a larger advantage, 13-6, early in the second period before TV came to life on a 9-0 run with 1:40 left before the break. At that point it was South Winn’s turn to light up the rim with Payton Poshusta hitting a long ball and jumper. Lansing added a three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining to take SW into halftime with a 23-18 lead.

The Trojans scored the first and last basket of the third quarter, but those would be TV’s only points as South Winn galloped out front, 35-22.

Brittany Shindelar opened up the fourth quarter with a 10-foot jumper, and the remaining five points of the quarter for SW came from the charity stripe as the Lady Warriors secured the 42-30 win.

Thanks to Mother Nature’s constant interference with the schedule, the Lady Warriors will have four games in five days this week. The busy week began Monday at Starmont and Tuesday versus West Central at home. Game results and statistics were unavailable at press time. The week will conclude at North Fayette Valley Thursday and then against Starmont at home Friday.
