It’s simple. The South Winn boys’ basketball team just wants to play the game. The Warriors took care of the ball and managed to convert steals and defensive board into points in their 76-31 win over Ed-Co on Friday.

After a 10-day hiatus from the hardwood due to weather cancellations, South Winn stormed the court in the first eight-minute segment, putting up 25 points. While Trevor Schweinefus had nine of those first 25 points, four of them came with an exclamation point in the form of dunks. Adam Lensing contributed another 10 in the effort as SW held the Vikings to seven points.

Carrying on, the Warriors tacked a 9-0 run to start the second stanza and held a 44-18 advantage as the two teams went into the lockerrooms.

The dagger dug in further in the third quarter as SW collected 24 additional points to lead, 68-24, as the Warrior starters went to the pine, allowing the younger players on the bench to take the court. SW polished off its fifth conference victory, 76-31, and sits third in the UIC standings behind MFL/MarMac (6-0) and Clayton Ridge (6-1).

T. Schweinefus and Lensing led the team offensively with 23 and 20 points, respectively.

Topping the rebound charts in three quarters of action was Andre Walz, who tallied 13, 11 of which were defensive caroms. Jordan Rommes dished out a team-high seven assists.

Looking to get some games in, South Winn traveled to MFL/MarMac last night (Tuesday, Jan. 21) in a UIC matchup, but results and statistics were unavailable at press time.

Later this week, the action heats up as the Warriors travel to Postville on Friday. After weather interfered with last week’s South Winn/North Fayette Valley matchup, the two teams are once again looking to face off Saturday, Jan. 25, in a quadrangular, beginning at 2 p.m. with the junior varsity girls.
