Last week was a big one for South Winn in UIC competition versus West Central and Clayton Ridge, both teams that were victorious over the Warriors a year ago. But a year of growth has turned the tides as South Winn tripped up both foes by nearly the same score, 61-38 over West Central and 61-39 over the Eagles.

vs. West Central

It was a tale of two halves and staunch Warrior defense on Tuesday, Dec. 10, as SW traveled to West Central.

South Winn opened the first quarter quickly as Trevor Schweinefus poured in nine of the Warriors’ 13 points. SW led by as many as five points before the lid closed on the basket, allowing West Central to gather its composure and claim a 13-11 lead. With three ticks of the clock remaining, T. Schweinefus grabbed a pass and took the ball to the hoop to knot the score, 13-13.

It was a slow start to the second stanza for Warriors as the Devils danced to a 25-18 lead with 2:06 left to play before the break. Undaunted, SW ramped up the offense to knock down nine unanswered points to lead, 27-25, at halftime.

The third quarter was the turning point for SW as the Warrior defense caused Devil turnovers and held WC to just four points from the floor to lead, 42-29.

Desperate to control the tempo, WC continually paraded the Warrior athletes to the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, allowing SW to extend its lead as the Warriors were 11 of 13, claiming victory, 61-38.

SW was led by T. Schweinefus with 20 points from the floor and nine rebounds. Tyler Numedahl poured in 12 in the win.

vs. Clayton Ridge

A year ago, the Eagles had defeated SW a trio of times, twice in UIC action and again in the postseason, but Friday the game belonged to the Warriors.

Seven first-quarter points went to Andre Walz as SW settled into the fast-paced offense and defense that forced the Eagles to move the ball into the paint, rather than around the much-preferred perimeter.

SW increased the spread in the second stanza as half of the Warriors’ points came at the free throw line. The Eagles were held to six points in the period, with four at the charity stripe, as SW went to the break on top, 32-19.

Clayton Ridge would have a chance to mount a comeback in the third period and edged to within six with 2:17 remaining. An 8-0 run to finish out the period teetered the momentum back to SW for a 47-35 lead.

South Winn closed out the game in the fourth, holding the Eagles to four points as the Warriors earned its third UIC win, 61-39.

Leading the Warriors in scoring were seniors Adam Lensing with 17 points, T. Schweinefus with 15, and Walz with 10, respectively.

Walz earned a double-double with 13 boards as well; Lensing hauled down eight and Schweinefus had six.
