Taking three games each from West Central and Clayton Ridge last week, the Lady Warrior volleyball team grabbed two UIC wins and a third-place finish at the Decorah tournament on Saturday.

Hitting the road to West Central on Tuesday, Sept. 24, the SW volleyball team claimed victory in game one rather handily, 25-13.

Game two was more of a challenge as the Blue Devils led, 3-1, early, but South Winn pulled out to a 15-9 advantage. Long volleys and serving troubles hindered the Warriors, allowing West Central to regain a 22-21 lead. A Micole Lansing kill inched South Winn back into the game and a Becca Franzen block knotted the score, 23-23. After taking control once again, Lexie Warth put the nail in the coffin with a slam to give SW the 25-23 victory.

Game three looked to be a repeat of the second set early on, but each South Winn server managed to string together several points as the Warriors took game three and the match, 25-16.

On Thursday, the Lady Warriors were sporting their pink uniforms in support of breast cancer awareness as they played host to Clayton Ridge.

Some big serves by Warth in game one first pulled SW even with the Eagles, 8-8, before she landed a pair of ace serves on the floor and left the service line after giving the Lady Warriors an 11-9 lead.

After falling behind later on, it was Lansing who pushed SW to the front once again as the Lady Warriors won game one, 25-20.

In games two and three, South Winn took care of business to win, 25-12 and 25-19.

Saturday at the Decorah varsity tournament, the Lady Warriors finished third out of 10 teams competing. The day started with an impressive two-game win over Decorah (23-21, 21-12), before South Winn rolled over Postville (21-11, 21-4) and MFL/MarMac (21-12, 21-12). It was a three-game match versus a top-notch Wapsie Valley team that didn’t land in SW’s favor to finish out pool play (21-18, 16-21, 7-15).

Entering the championship tournament, the Warriors were seeded third behind Chatfield and Wapsie Valley and dropped both matches. South Winn won game one versus Chatfield, 25-23, but struggled in games two and three to be defeated, 25-21 and 15-4.

Facing Wapsie Valley for the second time in the tournament, fatigue from the long day of games was exhibited as SW lost, 25-10 and 25-21.
