Rommes’ kickoff return sets stage for SW 58-14 win

Entering week five, the hunger for the district crown and a possible state championship appearance is still burning for the South Winn football team after clobbering St. Ansgar, 58-14, at home on Friday.

“I thought we did a nice job defending St Ansgar's rushing attack most of the night,” complimented SW coach Jason Ohrt. “I was very impressed how our linebackers played.  Ryan Hageman, Tyler Numedahl, Ben Meyer and Adam Lensing continue to get better every week.”

The Warriors had a perfect second wedge on the opening kickoff to Jordan Rommes that allowed him to return the pigskin 96 yards for SW’s first TD of the night.

That momentum carried into the first defensive series for the Warriors as the Saints were forced to punt from their own 49-yard line.

Taking advantage of the possession, SW marched down the field 80 yards, and Christian Kleve was left to punch the pigskin across the goal line with 6:41 remaining in the first quarter.

Two minutes later, the Saints got on the board to narrow the margin to 14-7. However, there was still plenty of time for the Warriors to find the end zone again as Jared Schroeder, Garrett Bohach, Kleve, and Ryan Hageman plowed through the Saints’ line on the ground. Bohach found the goal line from six yards out with 2:57 remaining to put SW on top, 22-7.

The Saints scored early in the second period, but that was the last time St. Ansgar would find its way into the end zone. After the Saints scored two minutes into the quarter, two passes from Bohach to Jordan Rommes ate up 70 yards to give SW its first tally of the second stanza and a 28-14 advantage.

Bohach connected with Rommes two minutes later on a 74-yard touchdown pass to give SW a 36-14 lead, and the Warriors never looked back.

At halftime, South Winn led, 52-14, but the defense held strong as the Warriors returned to the gridiron for the second half.

Two plays into the third period, Landers Kuboushek came out from under a pile of players with possession of a Saint fumble. South Winn would score for the final time with 9:35 remaining when Bohach connected with sophomore Carson Lensing from nine yards out.

“This was a great win on our Homecoming, and I am proud of how our kids were able to play a complete football game for four quarters.  Our coaching staff put in a lot of time to build a solid game plan that our kids were able to execute,” concluded Ohrt.

This Friday may be the Warriors’ toughest challenge yet on the road at North Fayette Valley as the team tries to get one step closer to winning the district title.
