Arlene (Oldenburg) Rients dies Sept. 23

Arlene F. Rients, 80, of Oelwein, Iowa died on Monday evening, September 23, 2013 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral Service:  2:00 P.M. Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Christ United Presbyterian Church, Oelwein, with Rev. Charis Combs-Lay officiating.

Visitation:  4:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein and for one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

Interment:  Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, Iowa.

Arlene Florence Oldenburg was born on July 19, 1933 in Streator, Illinois the daughter of Carl Richard & Florence Irene (Ruestman) Oldenburg, Sr.  She attended the Long Point Schools, Dana Schools and graduated from Flanagan High School in Flanagan, Illinois in 1951.  Arlene was united in marriage to Harold Wayne Rients on November 11, 1951 at Minonk, Illinois.

Arlene & Harold farmed near Flanagan until they moved to a farm south of Fayette, Iowa in January of 1954.  They retired and moved to Oelwein in 1999.  Arlene worked with Jan Irvine for 21 years in their business, Jan & Arlene’s Wallpapering and Painting.  Arlene was a member of Christ United Presbyterian Church where she had previously taught Sunday school.  When the children were young, she was active in the Oelwein P.T.A.  Arlene enjoyed ceramics, gardening, volunteering at Grandview Health Care Center, attending performances at the Williams Center and attending her grandchildren’s school activities.

Arlene is survived by her Daughter: Kathleen (David) Bowers of Urbandale; Son-In-Law: Gene Fox of Maynard; 3 Grandchildren:  Morgan Fox of Maynard, Krista Bowers of Bettendorf  & Amy Bowers of Urbandale and Several Nieces & Nephews.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Harold on October 19, 2003, son: Richard “Rick”, a daughter: Cynthia Fox and 2 brothers:  Carl Oldenburg, Jr. and Donald Oldenburg.
