Patterson services held Monday at Redeemer Lutheran 

Dale Duane Patterson was born on March 2, 1933, on his family’s farm in rural Volga, Iowa to Floyd and Hatti (Kerr) Patterson. Growing up on the farm, Dale enjoyed the many hours he spent helping with chores. He graduated from Wadena High School in 1951. Dale proudly served his country in the United States Army from October 1953 until September 1955.

Dale worked a short time at the Elgin Echo and Tripoli Leader newspapers after earning a degree as a linotype operator. He was united in marriage to Bev Thompson on May 28, 1960 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in West Union. Dale worked for the West Union Co-op and then retired after 26 years with the Iowa Department of Transportation where he worked in highway maintenance. Before and after retirement, Dale continued to fulfill his passion for farm work by working for local farmers.

Dale passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at his home in West Union, Iowa. He enjoyed gardening, maintaining his cars, horse-shows and rodeos. He also enjoyed coffee with friends, visiting with neighbors and trips to the Blackhills and Branson. Dale loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Dale was a long-time member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in West Union, Iowa and First Lutheran Church in rural Ossian, Iowa. Dale also attended St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Eldorado, Iowa and most recently joined Redeemer Lutheran Church in West Union, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Bev, of West Union; two children, Trudy (Steve) Belay, of Decorah, Iowa and Troy (Deb) Patterson of Burlington, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jake Belay of Iowa City, Katie Belay of Decorah, and Zach Patterson, Emma Patterson and Tyler Patterson, all of Burlington, Iowa; two sisters, Alo Yearous of Postville and Darlene (Louie) Halverson of Stoughton, WI; and several nieces and nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lyle Patterson and Floyd Patterson Jr., and one sister, EllaNora Whittenbaugh.

Funeral services were held on Monday, September 16, 2013, at 10:30 am at Redemer Lutheran Church in West Union. Burial followed in West Union Cemetery.

A public visitation was held on Sunday, September 15, 2013, from 4 pm until 7 pm at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union.
